first active now closed to new applicants, thats not very reassuring ?

Not very reassuring for whom? If you were looking to apply, then they are sparing you a long wait.

Why is it not reassuring? When a bank launches a market leading savings account they will generally have a target for the amount of money that they want to raise with it: when they have raised that amount of savings it's not unusual for them to close the account to new applicants so as not to overshoot. Reducing the interest rate also works, but if they're also struggling under the weight of applications then closing to new applicants makes perfect sense.

Just for info, had error message (Aw snap, something's gone wrong) when trying to login on Brave last night. Tried several times, ending up with a load of SMS codes coming through, that I could do nothing with. Worked fine with Firefox though.

No, it's common practice, when a bank or building society has taken enough money in through a particular account, they'll close to new applications.
