When I phoned, I expected them to say maybe Saturday or even Monday, and they were doing all the work for me (except opening the new one), so I didn't mind the wait. I was surprised and pleased at the speed of progress enough to put a post up. I opted to phone because of feedback from this forum and thread, and a dislike for the Sandi chatbot!

Now I think about it I think I used the Sandi bot to close the edge saver last year and remember it was quite quick. Unfortunately I think I confused Santander with Virgin Money in my head, thinking it would be quicker to phone Santander (my experience of closing accounts with Virgin Money is that it is quicker to phone). The Santander advisor I got was a bit unsure and put me on hold for a bit. Hopefully it will be done by Monday or I will ring them again to check.

Edited: It did take 2 working days in the end. Closure requested by phone on a Thursday, the account disappeared from online banking the following Monday.

Reading through this whole thread again it just seems pretty much hit or miss with how long it takes to close an account, be that by phone or by Sandi chatbot.

My recent request through Sandi took 10 days to complete, even though the account was emptied before the closure request.

After waiting 8 days I contacted customer services, who tried repeatedly to close the account manually but kept getting error messages for reasons they could not explain. The request had to be referred to the back office and the closure eventually completed 2 days later.

I have another one maturing this coming Wednesday. I wonder if it is worth emptying and closing before the interest is added, and getting all the interest in the account closure balance transfer, as that would be earlier in the day - the last one was after the end of the banking day - and may lead to the account disappearing by Thursday morning instead of Friday. Might just give it a go to see what happens.

Well, that plan failed. Removed the £4K on Wednesday at 21.50 after the bonus was showing as ended and asked for closure hoping the account would close and all interest would be transferred out for this morning. Account currently sitting with £19.84 interest in it which I can't get out - "account previously cancelled". So it seems it is hit and miss as to how long it takes to close the account. £4K currently sitting in my 2.96% easy access saver waiting for them to get their finger out - would have been better leaving it in the Edge earning 3.45%.

I collected the £4K and the interest before closing it, and moved the money to an account paying decent interest while I waited.

I typically refresh mine soon after getting the notice of the rate expiring. I didn't think about interest being added between the closure process being requested and actioned, but that's a good reason to do it after or a good while before.

So 50/50 success rate. Closed both mine and MrsM's second accounts Sunday night. Hers has had interest paid into current account and disappeared and new account now opened. Mine is showing a small amount of interest in the account but is still open, can't withdraw it. I was able to withdraw the full interest from the first account but the account is still open so MrsM 100% success, me 0%. I have gone through close account for the first account again with Sandi and it didn't argue so will wait and see what happens.
