HSBC SCAM 08007838422
Please be aware that 08007838422 appears to be used in a scam. An HSBC agent confirmed to me today (25/06/2026) that this call was not genuine, and they reported the number internally.
The caller was very convincing, claimed to be calling on behalf of HSBC, and spoke with what sounded like a native British accent. He instructed me to log into my HSBC mobile banking app and approve a login attempt from another device. When I asked why, he refused to explain the purpose of the call until I had confirmed the request in the app.
I declined to approve the login.
Shortly afterwards, I received an email from payment.servicing.team@hsbc.com stating that I needed to provide a reason for an international payment of £74.74.
This email also appeared suspicious.
The confusing part is that I had genuinely made an international purchase for exactly £74.74, but the payment had already been completed and received by the merchant some time ago. This makes me believe the scammers may have had access to some transaction details, making the scam appear more convincing.
Please stay vigilant. If you receive a similar call, do not approve any login requests or security prompts in your banking app unless you initiated them yourself. If you're unsure, hang up and contact HSBC using the official number on the back of your bank card or through the HSBC app.

To be fair, this has always been the advice for a very long time now - never, ever act on a call purporting to be from your bank, credit card, broadband provider, whatever.
As you say, call them back on a number that you know to be genuine - ideally using a different phone to the one they called you on.

if in doubt hang up and dial 159
159 works in the same way as 101 for the police or 111 for the NHS. It's the number you can trust to get you through to your bank safely and securely, every time. So if you think someone is trying to trick you into handing over money or personal details – stop, hang up and call 159 to speak directly to your bank.

Just make sure your line is disconnected. If in doubt reboot your mobile or use a different line.

Thats a legacy analogue/landlines issue. Hanging up on a mobile terminates the call. No harm in rebooting your phone or switching to another one, but its not necessary.

Yup. Network initiated clearing (called party clearing) time for landlines was reduced to 10 seconds around 2014, and I've a feeling it's been reduced further since then.

All true, but Network-Initiated Clearing and Party Clearing (CPC) does not apply to WhatsApp. I know some people view WhatsApp as the de facto voice platform (an abhorrent trend and one I really can't understand). So a spoof call coming in through that could in principle hold the connection. Be paranoid.

Hence the advice to call 159 - you cant do that within WhatsApp.

Care to explain how, exactly?
The concept of "lifting the handset without dialling" doesn't exist within WhatsApp.
ISTM that it's strictly "first party clearing", be that either the called party or the calling party.
Be careful, sure - but paranoia isn't healthy.

The scenario I was thinking about was:
- Spoof call initiated via WhatsApp that victim accepts.
- Victim is flustered but remembers the advice so wants to talk to their real bank.
- In heat of moment does not disconnect WhatsApp call.
- Victim opens regular phone app and tries to dial 159 (or a known good number).
- Places handset to ear expecting to hear a reliable voice, but is still talking to scammer on live WhatsApp call - who could change accent and continue to scam.
I don't really do WhatsApp calls so not sure what happens if I switch to the regular phone app and attempt to dial when a VoIP call is live on WhatsApp.
