If you are on an iPhone the Phone app would grab the speaker and the microphone from WhatsApp and therefore whilst the line is still connected neither party can hear or talk to each other without switching back to WhatsApp.

Android I believe works broadly similar but as always the precise details will depend on exactly which phone you have. Therefore if the call has been initiated on the Phone app your idea that the scammer could still be the one talking isnt possible.

How does this work if you are foolish enough to have an account with a bank which only provides customer service 9am - 5pm on weekdays and you call 159 at the weekend or in the evening? Or maybe a bank like LHV which has no telephone support at all?

159 covers over 99% of the UK’s retail bank current accounts but not all of them

According to the Stop Scams UK website these are the banks supported:

Bank of Ireland UK, Bank of Scotland, Barclays, Cater Allen Private Bank, The Co-operative Bank, Danske Bank, Chase, First Direct, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds Bank, Metro Bank, Modulr, Monzo, Nationwide Building Society, NatWest, Revolut, Royal Bank of Scotland, Santander, Spring, Starling, Tide, True Potential LLP, TSB and Ulster Bank, Virgin Money, Zempler Bank.

So no Triodos Bank, and no LHV. Should an issue arise at the weekend or in the evening with Triodos you're on your own. With LHV you just have an email address and I have seen posts where customers' emails have just been ignored.

IMO it should be mandatory for a bank to provide a weekend customer service - as a minimum. If a bank doesn't have the overheads of a branch network the money it saves/doesn't spend should fund it.
