AI Overview
Whether you can leave electrical products in your bag depends entirely on the specific airport you are departing from. [1]If you are flying out of a major UK hub with next-generation 3D scanners (such as London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Birmingham, Newcastle, or Edinburgh), you can generally leave all laptops, tablets, and large electricals in your cabin bag. [1, 2, 3, 4]However, if your airport still uses older X-ray machines, you must remove all large electrical items (like laptops, tablets, and large headphones) from your bag and place them flat in a separate security tray. Which terminal?
I went through T2 numerous times last year and left everything like that in my bag. Same again back in February..

'staff yelling at you to do so'
Yes.
It's designed to keep people on edge.
They also change the instructions so people don't get used to stuff.
Check the website of the airport you're flying from - don't assume that what the rules were last time you flew still apply.
And then do whatever security staff 'yell at you to do'.
It may or may not be the same as your last experience.
As for the OP, the fault lies with her child.
