TIP:

If you are Old like me, and can easily remember the registrations of family cars from the 1960s, and the first car you owned back in the 1970s, but don't have a clue what is on the front & back of your current Eurobox, write it on a piece of card and keep it in your wallet (I keep mine in that pocket inside my mobile 'phone case that otherwise serves no useful purpose)

It has saved me going back to where I can see the number 'plate a few times 😉

I'm not quite old enough to remember the reg numbers of cars from the 60s but I do remember the number from my grandpa's Hillman Super Minx in the early 70s.

OP - you'll get a flurry of letters getting scarier sounding, then after about 3 or 4 you'll get an offer at a reduced rate to "save you court costs" and some guff about passing to their litigators.

Then they'll accept you're not falling for the scam and stop wasting stamps on you.

All anyone can be reasonably be expected to read on those signs from a car is that it's 90 minutes parking for customers. Presumably whoever the driver of the car was felt that they were a customer, and the invoice shows 56 minutes which is under 90.

It wouldn't occur to me to validate the parking.

Nobody is going to be able to read the fine print on those.

My wife and I get round this problem by generally keeping our cars for at least 10 years, so the number plates are easily commited to memory. 😉 Also, all my cars cars since 1996 have had the same number plate, so that's even easier!

If Scotland has no way to hold a driver legally responsible for failing to follow the car park operator's requirements, that seems a fail on their part.

We do, provided the operator knows who the driver is.

Well, not really a loophole in the law, that's just how contract law works as standard. The hole is in the operators' business model.

Any "loophole" which exists is that available in England & Wales. "Keeper liability" makes somebody who was not responsible for a transgression subsequently responsible for any payments or penalties resulting from that transgression.

I would say that is a loophole firmly in the favour of the parking operators. Without it they would have to establish who the driver was - something which, in most cases, they would struggle to do.
