The airline won't know you have alcohol unless it's on display though. If it's inside your case they couldn't possibly know.

Airport security don't police the amount of alcohol you're taking through (as long as it's below the relevant volume limit for liquids).

I've been on many domestic flights and never heard of airlines having issues with drink being in hand luggage (drink which is already inside the passengers may be a different story…).

In the mentioned Ryanair example, they claimed the right to search cabin baggage:

Ryanair states: "Customers will not be allowed to carry alcohol on board and all cabin baggage will be searched at the boarding gates.

"Any alcohol purchased in airport shops or elsewhere must be packed carefully in a suitable item of cabin baggage, which will be tagged at the gate and then placed in the aircraft hold free of charge if you have purchased priority boarding or have a small piece of hand luggage.

"If the bag is unsuitable for placing in the hold (e.g. plastic bag) then customers will be required to dispose of the alcohol in the bins provided.

"Boarding gates will be carefully monitored and customers showing any signs of anti-social behaviour or attempting to conceal alcohol will be denied travel without refund or compensation."

This related specifically to flights to known hotspots where passengers were more likely to be disruptive (Ibiza, Tenerife, etc), rather than a blanket policy on all of their flights - it was reported on here back in 2018 and in various secondary news outlets since then but I don't know if it still applies. However, the point remains that it's up to individual airlines what policies they define in this area, rather than it being standardised across the industry or per airport…

Ive not seen a single cabin bag search at the gate. Ever. Ever ever. That sentence above states its normal practice, which is absolute codswallop.

The OP is overthinking this and the rest of you arent helping.

Perhaps worth clarifying exactly what you're referring to, as nothing in the preceding post states or implies that cabin bag searches are normal practice…

You know as well as I do this isnt normal so why muddy the waters by including it?

All the OP needs to do is take the wine to the airport, go through security, keep wine in bag, get on board, fly, get off.

Nothing else applies and nothing else needs to be added to the above to muddy the water or confuse him/her.

I am emphatically not asserting that cabin bag searches are normal practice, and the preceding posts need to be seen in context - the fact that one airline, on selected routes, at a point in time, said that they would do so was only cited in response to a question about how airlines could tell, and the whole subject was only being discussed to clarify that rules are set by individual airlines, rather than industry-wide or per airport, i.e. given that OP is seeking reassurance on this matter, they should ask the airline not just the airport.

And the airline will say it is absolutely fine, because decisions taken on whether to actually check would likely be taken on viewing who the pax were at the airport at the time, and this would only happen on extremely rare occasions (a waiting room full of lads on the late Friday flight to Ibiza).

I'm not suggesting that OP asks the airline how likely it is that cabin baggage would be searched, I'm saying that they should be ascertaining the airline's policy on alcohol being brought in the cabin if they're seeking reassurance (as implied by starting this thread).

People do like to over complicate things.

I have regularly taken alcohol from airport duty free onto planes, they have never bothered to even put it in those sealed bags half the time either.
