No Duty Free Alcohol allowed on board with Ryanair??

I've just received an email stating that duty free alcohol bought in the airport now has to go into your cabin baggage and has to be tagged and placed in the hold if you are flying with Ryanair?

Is this a new rule? I've always been able to carry on a duty free bag previously.

Just received an email stating this.......

Dear Customer,

Your flight to Spain – Booking reference XXXXX

In order to prioritize the comfort and safety of all passengers, Ryanair will implement the following restrictions on your upcoming flight to Spain:

• Customers will not be allowed to carry alcohol on board and all cabin baggage will be searched at the boarding gates.

• Any alcohol purchased in airport shops or elsewhere must be packed carefully in a suitable item of cabin baggage, which will be tagged at the gate and then placed in the aircraft hold free of charge.

• If the bag is unsuitable for placing in the hold (e.g. plastic bag) then customers will be required to dispose of the alcohol in the bins provided.

• Boarding gates will be carefully monitored and customers showing any signs of anti-social behaviour or attempting to conceal alcohol will be denied travel without refund or compensation.

Thank you in advance for your co-operation with these procedures which we hope will allow you to enjoy your flight with us.

Yours sincerely,

Ryanair Customer Services

    Haha! No.

I just realised that if I buy duty free alcohol in the airport this will now also have to fit in my cabin bag, whereas before, you could take a duty free carrier bag on board as well for free. I always used it to transport my butties and crisps etc for the flight.

Another way to make you pay!
  • Cant see where a cost comes into it, the article says it will be put in the hold free of charge.

Fair play to them for trying to crack down on disorderly behaviour on flights, I assume they are doing it on certain routes only.

looks like they extended the 'no duty free' to include Alicante flights from Glasgow Prestwick and Manchester

  • There is no such thing as Duty Free alcohol at the airport if you are travelling within the EU.

Probably cheaper (and obviously more convenient) to buy it in Spain.

If you have hold luggage booked, you could always buy it in a local supermarket and pack it, assuming you have enough weight allowance.

The last few flights I've taken the airport shops have been really expensive. Some of their prices are no better than a local supermarket.

They only put it in the hold if it fits into your cabin bag which then gets taken off you at the gate, and tagged, then gets loaded into the hold.

It's not to do with the cost of the alcohol, the point is that a duty free carry bag with anything bought from duty free (not just alcohol) used to be allowed onto the plane as an extra carry on bag.
It meant that you could, in effect, have an extra bag on board without actually paying for it. You could buy a miniature in duty free and then stick your butties, crisps, bottle of water etc in that duty free bag and take it on board. Now, it has to fit in your cabin bag, and go in the hold, or it's not going!

Where do you get this from? The email you received explicitly says that *alcohol* bought at the airport must be checked. You'll still be allowed to bring crisps, water, etc. on board.

If I've understood Ryanair's new rule - you could buy anything (except alcohol) in airport shops and take it on board in the plastic bag.

You can take miniatures through security as things stand as they don't breach the 100ml limit.

This appears to be an attempt to stop passengers buying alcohol airside to consume surreptitiously on the flight - due to the rise in the number of incidents where boozed up punters have behaved badly on aircraft.

I believe Jet2 have stopped serving alcohol before 11am (?) as a result.

Not helped by airport bars opening at silly o'clock times of the morning for pre flight swallow sessions.
