Can anyone give me any advice on the process for cancelling before the cooling off period and how you go about the transition to a new provider? I don't want to be left without a service for a period of time.

If you cancel does that take effect immediately? Or on a set date? Do you get chance to sort a new provider and it all get ganded over smoothly?

At this point I think that's what I want to do, I'm just very unhappy with what I've got here from Vodafone. I might even go back to Plusnet because I never had an issue there, It was purely a cost thing because Vodafone was the cheapest option so I thought why not change, not knowing the service would be so much worse.

I cancelled Vodafone broadband after 10 days having moved from BT (FTTC to FTTC), Vodafone having failed to supply any service let alone a slow one.

The actual process was to ring up and say "I wish to cancel my broadband contract" slowly and clearly, several times and to several different people over 3 or 4 calls until I received an email confirming the fact.

No idea if if service ends immediately because I never had one.

Took BT 2 weeks to reinstate service, was a new contract/connection.

Note the cooling-off period usually starts on the day you sign the contract, which was probably a little while prior to your VF service commencing. You are likely to be well past that period.

I don't want to be left without a service for a period of time.

If you cancel you will almost certainly be without service for a fortnight, while your new provider gets everything ready at their end and the 14-day cooling-off period runs down.

I’d check with VF about leaving, cooling off periods generally are after you sign up (the period between sign up and the service starting ) and not after the service has started , basically is the time allowed to reconsider if you made a unforced choice , especially if someone felt they were ‘bullied’ into signing up to the new service , it’s not a try before you buy period , so you need to be sure you won’t get hammered by early term charges , which at the start of a contract are likely to be massive .

If you check and they confirm you can leave penalty free , you simply select a new provider and use the switching process which advises the old provider of your intention to leave (you should get an impact statement from the losing provider outlining the costs if there are any )

If you use Plusnet , or anyone else using Openreach , it will be using the FTTP connection that’s been fitted , and not going back onto the FTTC connection you had previously with PN , even if you went for a speed lower than 150Mb , but it’s very unlikely that your current problem is with the underlying Openreach FTTP network so (for example) PN on FTTP should be fine , presumably a landline style phone service isn’t needed as Plusnet don’t supply that anymore.

If Vodafone say you will need to pay to leave , keep reporting the fault , eventually (if they don’t fix it ) they may offer you the option to leave as an easy way to offload what they see as a problematic customer.

For Vodafone, their terms state that the cooling-off period starts at the "Activation Date"

7.3 If you want to end the Agreement.
    a) Changing your mind. If you have changed your mind you can cancel your order by contacting us within
14 days of your service activation date. We will refund all payments received from you including costs of
delivery of equipment but excluding installation costs (see below). You will need to return any equipment
provided to you. Where we have started to provide the services to you before the date you cancel you
must pay for any service you have already received.

I have Vodafone 150Mbps (full fibre/FTTP) when first installed February, first few days l was getting around 30Mbps - lower then previous provider.

Got better, just ran a test and came up with 145Mbps on mobile and 147Mbps on PlayStation (wireless)

It looks like I don't actually have an ethernet cable so can't perform that test yet, I'll try and get one tomorrow.
