That doesn't sound at all a huge amount for that many people for a week. We too will be balancing lunches out against dinners at the cottage in the evening on our holiday as well - it suits us better and there are some nice places for lunch, plus on some days we'll no doubt make butties and take with us too.

Having a lovely time so far, we’re doing a mix of busy and quiet days. I’m keeping a rough note of what we’re spending and we’re up to approx £900 of our £1200 budget with 2 days left. Not too bad… it’s food that’s the expensive part. 9 of us and everyone eats adult portions.

I haven’t said anything and I may well be being grouchy, but I’m amazed neither of our working adult children nor their partners have offered to contribute at all. We were always paying for the accommodation and expected to pay for groceries. But their own lunches out, entrance fees, ice creams etc we’ve been paying for it all.

We decided in advance not to ask them as didn’t want it to be awkward and we’d see what happened and now we know 😂 In future, I think we’ll need to specify they need to pay their own entrance fees to things and food outside the house. Imagine once all 5 kids have partners, a trip away would bankrupt us 🫠

I don't think you are being grouchy - you are just noting how things are working out with a big family holiday.

We booked and paid for holiday accommodation last summer to share with an adult child, their other half and 2 young kids. We had to pay a school holiday premium price and we ended up paying for all the groceries. They gave us a shopping list including steak and prawn night. They only bought a bottle of red wine which neither DH or me drink. Like you, I found it a bit odd but we did have a lovely holiday. I've just thought about it for the first time in ages and it still seems strange.

I’m going away next month with my mum & a friend. Will be contributing to food & meals out. My mum paid for my flight & I’ve paid for my cat sitting which actually cost more!

Were they invited to join the holiday and understood it would all be paid for perhaps?

Even so, I’d never have gone on holiday as an adult (or even a working young adult) without expecting to pay towards activities and food. I do think that’s quite shocking. However, I’ve been away with close friends or family who have insisted they pay, raced to get the bill first etc, and have refused any contribution. This didn’t sit comfortably with me but I found it was easier just to take a step back in those situations. Often, I’d leave a little ‘thank you’ at the end as we were leaving as a contribution. Maybe your adult children will do the same.

I’m glad you’re having a lovely time though and still within budget. Enjoy your last couple of days 😊.

How old are your adult children (and partners)? If into their 20s Id have expected them.to have worked out they needed to contribute. If its not long left sixth form age, I suspect they gave it no thought that the dynamics have changed.

Anyway you have a lovely hol, dont let this spoil it and going forward tactfully mention what they need to pay for themselves if you all go away together in the future.
