Never heard of a summer school like that, up here they do transition sessions/days during term time.

They do one transition day for the whole county, although his was cut short to just a morning as it was during the heatwave and they closed the school at lunchtime.

The summer school is a week, I think it’s 8.30-2.30. They kind of run light fun classes ie they’d do experiments in science and a treasure hunt in geography. They get to learn the layout of the school and get used to moving between lessons without any older kids there. It’s a big school (about 1800) pupils so it’s a very gentle introduction and they get to meet some of their peers.
So I guess it works out at £20 a day and covers materials for classes as they don’t want it out of the school budget.

They really didn’t make it clear that it was means tested though, if they had I’d have still signed him up but the heads up would have been good. The year 6 WhatsApp group has been going mad 😂

A good few are dropping out and a few others are signing up as they hadn’t realised it was free for them! Most of my DSs friends are still going luckily.

Hi re the bbq, we have a policy of bring what you want to eat and drink, ie burgers or crisps etc. Anything left over they take home. This works really well for us as hosts because it means my good booze isn't snaffled and replaced with whatever they found in their cupboards lol.
Hopefully the next one will be better, but j

Our local secondary does the same, similar pupil numbers too. Not sure if a cost is incurred though, something else to add to the list for DS1 moving up next year.

ooo… I like this. I must admit now it’s annoyed me, I can’t unsee it. Hosting everything is expensive and quite a lot of work. We cheat a bit and use paper plates to save washing up. But I think we need to be firmer and say can each household bring a side or a pud plus booze. So for a BBQ we would just do meat and rolls.
I’ve actually told everyone nice and early that we won’t be hosting Christmas Day this year. I’ll have just finished radiotherapy beginning of that month and will still be having immunotherapy. We’ll see what happens there. Worst case (or best case in my mind 🤫), we have a nice quiet one just the 7 of us. Sounds lovely!!

That sounds like a very reasonable idea to me. You shouldn't have to bear the cost if the event isn't reciprocated elsewhere. V x

The school is going to be potentially looking at a situation where the bulk of attendees are those receiving the summer school for free, so it'll cost them to run it. Unless they are able to claim the money back from somewhere (other than the fee paying parents!).

I think you must be due a run on finances coming in soon, not further additional costs!
