MSE News: Lidl shopper? You now need to earn points to get 'freebies' and money-off coupons

Under Lidl's revamped loyalty scheme, which launched today (Tuesday 5 May), you now earn points for each pound spent, which you can either convert into money-off coupons or use to claim 'freebies'. But Lidl shoppers say they may now need to spend £10s or even £100s more to earn similar discounts to those they'd earn under the old scheme. Here's what's changed…

I drive an extra 1.5 miles to get to Lidl instead of going to Aldi. Used to quite enjoy the free baked good after £10 and then always got the massive bag of potatoes when I got to the free vegatable.

I'll be going to Aldi in future and saving my time.

I will get double points on any fruit purchases for the next couple of weeks, no great shakes.

Same here. A £10 spend for a free cake, followed by £50 for free fruit or veg every month was great for me. I'd usually get the most expensive on both, but to get the equivalent now will take spends of hundreds of pounds to accrue enough points. They're now as ungenerous as all the other supermarkets!

Based on 11 million UK app users(loyaltypass 2026), the ballpark low/med/high figures were 10/20/25% of users would hit the £250 shop for the 10% voucher every month. Thats 1.1m to 2.7m customers

Estimated maybe 5%-10% of these customers would effectively stop doing their main shop at Lidl due to the various reasons around the rewards changes, increased costs, feeling of betrayal, enshitification of a rewards scheme, marketing lies ("You asked for it") and even the main steam press covering this negatively. That equates to 55k to 270k customers stopping their large shops at Lidl, with each loss costing £3000+ in lost turnover over the annum.

If you take even the lowest ballpark figure, that equates to £165million in lost revenue... the high figure was £810million, with the most likely outcome somewhere in the middle at about £400million...

To me that seems insanely high, but even if it's anywhere near the low ballpark estimate, someone at Lidl has dropped an almighty clanger in their calculations. Oopsy!

I've just received yet another of their 'You asked for it, we listened' promo emails. Strange, as I don't recall ever being asked if I'd like them to change the rewards. If they had asked I'd have said no. I suspect the same would be true of most users.

Really disappointed with the change by Lidl re points earned. The MOST annoying claim is that customers asked for the change. I have shopped at my local Lidl since it opened and have never been asked for my opinion via email or online. That's just a lie.
