HSBC cashback offer

  • May I ask the amount that you were transferring to HSBC?

I was transferring £20k. It took them 26 working days to complete one of my transfers, and they failed to process the second transfer request, which caused the total to fall under £20k. Over the following months, they told me multiple times that the second transfer was on the way, until I submitted a formal complaint, at which point they admitted the second transfer was missing.

They initially gave me £100, and then offered an additional £75 in their final response, plus the £150 cashback I was meant to receive. The latter part was agreed upon after I opened a case with the FOS but it looked like that team wasn't aware of the FOS case. Two days after their final response via email, which I had already agreed to, they somehow proposed £50 instead of the £75 via the FOS portal. I inquired about the discrepancy, and the latest info I received from the FOS investigator was that they retracted the £50 offer and upheld their final response. I was wondering whether I should accept this and close the case, or pursue it further. I was generally quite happy with £175, as my initial expectation was £180.

  • They are related to me because it is about service and the recovery of service failure, which the compensation addresses to a (just about acceptable degree). Part of my complaint response was requiring the assurance the completed transfer after the delay was the end of the failure, that cashback would arrive on time and not something I would have to chase. Therefore, that's the litmus test for the ombudsman in my particular case.

Of course, things relate specifically to our own personal situation.
