British gas intend fitting an unwanted smart meter...

Well yes I already stated that I accept that will be the case at some point.
What I object to is some posters claiming that anyone who is not jumping in the air with joy at the prospect of having their non-smart meter upgraded is a gullible person taken in by conspiracy theories.

There is a well known phrase "If it ain't broke don't fix it."
The problem is that you may not actually know it is broken, you just know the reading is still going up, not if it is actually right…

Well my usage has not significantly varied over the years.

So you accept that you will have to have a new meter " at some point ". Does that mean you will wait till the supplier is forced to get a warrant of access and enter your property and change their meter when they deem it necessary .They now don t have to wait until meter certification ends apparantly.
EDIT.The cost of the warrant and locksmith falls on the occupant .Usually £200 for warrant and up to £150 for locksmith. It's added as a debt to the smart meter set in prepayment mode. That is the standard method used by all suppliers if they are not allowed to access their property .
All occcupiers have agreed in the Terms and Conditions of supply to allow access to the meters by the suppliers or their agents and meter readers and meter fitters between 8 am and 8 pm weekdays .

Probably not.
I don't often frequent the energy forum and have been rather bemused by some of the combative responses on this thread.
The OP simply asked if they were required to engage with BG to have an unwanted smart meter fitted when they already have a non smart meter that operates as intended. Some of the responses have been clear and helpful in answering this question. Others have felt unnecessary, which is why I posted my own rather straight forward reasons for not particularly wanting a meter upgrade, which seem reasonable to me. Anyway, done with this thread now.

"they already have a non smart meter that operates as intended"
If it's at the end of its certification they have no idea if it's working accurately, and neither do the energy supplier. "intended" doesn't really come into it.

At that point the supplier is required by law to replace the meter, or to disconnect the supply.

If you don't engage with British Gas they could potentially get a warrant to make forced entry into your house to install a smart meter. Unless your account is in serious debt and British Gas want to install a prepayment meter (which would be smart) then I don't think they would apply for such a warrant. If they did apply for no other reason than wanting to replace an existing meter that was not thought to be faulty, then a warrant might not be granted.

There is no debt on the account, it's paid in full every bill.

That is irrelevant. Once the meter exceeds it's certification period it must be replaced, or the supply must be disconnected. If you refuse to do this willingly then your supplier will obtain a warrant to enter the premises, legally force entry and either disconnect your supply or fit the smart meter, you will then be charged for the cost of that.
