If your meter needs to be replaced (i.e. it's faulty, or beyond its certified life) then you will have to have a smart meter installed.

Why are you reluctant - we had one installed last year and it has saved us a fortune.

I already have a non-smart meter that operates as intended.

The UK government wants a smart grid and so Ofgem have given all the suppliers targets for smart meter installations and fines if they don't meet the targets.

Also meters have a finite life and need replacing periodically.

It's now your turn to have your "traditional" meter replaced with a smart one.

As part of your energy supply contract you've agreed that BG can fit a meter on your premises, and can access that meter to service it or replace it. You have no grounds to refuse a smart meter unless you want them to remove your connection entirely.

What's the meter make and model?

What's its certification date? (Probably a circular orange sticker.)

Then check its lifetime at https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/66aa06d549b9c0597fdb0846/electricity-meters-schedule-4-240730.pdf

If it's not life expired then you can say No.

You can ignore any contact you have from them. If they want to go court order route to gain access and change it that is open to them.
