Smart meters bring access to smart tariffs. Most people can save money on a smart tariff.

I'm a relatively extreme case but I've probably saved £1000 on my electricity bill since my smart meter was installed in 2021.

The moment Octopus finally installed our smart meter I switched onto their "Tracker" tariff which saved about 35% compared to a non-smart tariff

Yes just another metering device but one that can, unlike your current meter, provide half hourly readings which can be used to provide a whole range of tariffs that offer cheaper electricity to many. Not everyone, but everyone with a heat pump, or batteries, or an EV or even good old fashion storage heaters.

And if it is just a metering device why are you so against one?

We saved over £1000 in the first year of having a smart meter! I've not been able to keep proper track long term, but some rough and ready calculations just now indicate we saved over £600 in 2025.

(We are heavy users, part of which is through our own lifestyle decisions but also largely due to necessity - electric shower and heat pump put in by the Housing Association.)

And so if your meter needs to be replaced, you'd have no issue with it being replaced with a smart meter that does the same thing?

The point is the meter doesn't need replaced, there is no benefit to me in replacing the existing meter with a smart one.
