In theory you can have smart gas without smart electric - this post suggested - but its quite old now.

And possibly it was suggested in a later post - also may need 2 separate hubs in the event that you use one supplier for gas and one for electric - as I am not sure at least back then suppliers play nice and share access. But Ive seen others reporting access issues when gas data goes bad in that scenario.
Not seen many other posts on the topic on MSE though - but has come up elsewhere a few times - including on some suppliers forums.
There is a risk for those with smart electric but failing gas after a switch - the electric hub just hasn't been allowed to "pair" (it's not a permanently open network waiting for any device at any time).
And if standard HAN comms not good enough, dual band HAN (gas meter and hub) and even Alt-Han wired (wireless HAN) adapters a possibility.
But I am not convinced if suppliers liability is only the last new Ofgem 5d strategy/90 day fix £40 fine - covers the cost of an engineers call out or meters / hubs / alt-han kit required - they may just choose to pay the £40 (and that might only by if fails completely - not just for gas)
