E.On Next trying to pull a fast one?

Be warned…

About two weeks ago, I took a gamble and decided to take out a one year fix with E.On Next (my existing company). As we mainly use during the day I was sure to chose a tariff that had the same day/night rate and this was confirmed in the email confirming the tariff change.

get my first statement post change and it has different day/night rates - 50% higher during the day and lower at night. Not what I want or changed to.

they are now saying g I selected a tariff with differing rates, even though my confirmation email shows the same and want to charge me £50 to swap to a new tariff.

they have one more change to fix this before a formal complaint is being submitted.

Are you sure that the tariff price quoted was not using April prices (after the reduction).

I signed up to a 12 month fix from Octopus for gas (5.28p per kWh) and it clearly states that this is based on the price from 1st April even though the fix starts before then. It's a bit of a sharp practice if you ask me.

This is what it says :

Tariff info (based on rates from 1st April)

    (all prices include VAT)

    Reference

    OE-FIX-12M-26-02-26

    Starts from

    12:00 AM, 29th Mar 2026

    Gas

    Unit price

    5.28p per kWh

    Standing charge

    33.83p per day

what I’m being billed since 7th March

as most of our usage is during the day it’s a big difference

It might be the same fix name covers both SR And E7 - I think Next Flex does.

And it might have defaulted to multirate by checking your MPAN / profile class (iirc 02 traditionally for domestic multirate) when they activated the tariff.

I've heard people being put back on e7 on supplier changes - not so sure if common on tariff changes though.

I would have thought a simple phone call would allow you back on single rate - or go complaint route - with the quoted price if kept a copy.

It ‘may’ have happened before when I last fixed, but I couldn’t be sure so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I noticed after a day and there was no exit fee so just accepted the new tariff for the minimal difference it made. But obvs this time I was certain I chose a tariff with the same day/night rates.

Waaaaaay back when (25 years ago) when I bought this house it did have an e7 meter but I’ve never had an e7 tariff since getting a smart meter fitted maybe 10 years ago. So it’s an interesting hypothesis and totally possible so will bear it in mind for the next step.

Is there any way to get that marker removed that you know of?

You're not the first person to have this problem, and I'm certain you won't be the last. They can definitely fix it on their system.

That's almost certainly where this all stems from. You'll just needto keep an eye out in future.

It'll be on the shared industry database. EON should be able to change it but it's not something that front-line customer support have access to.

If you look at a recent electricity bill you'll see your Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN) somewhere on it.

What is your profile clas shown as? Is it 02?

Before changing the PC though - just a couple of thoughts / questions

is the meter a 4 port or 5 port meter ?

if a 5 port meter - or a 4 port meter controlling restricted circuits - is their anything still reliant on those circuits - or at least the meter switching them on / off to restrict power use ?

Given your mainly day user - it seems unlikely - but its worth checking.

E7 for some is just a timed tariff - for others it's coupled to a circuit (time restricted) driving requirement too.

Have you called them and used the magic words 'I Wish to be Billed at Single Rate'?
