Ecotricity have said they’re not reducing the price at all for gas only customers on fixed price contracts.

All of thd RO was on electric.

Ecotricity werenot in ECO last year - so no 0.35p on gas due vs recent tariffs., or the higher amount on electric.per KWh. 0.94p

So only around 2.6p on electric due.

The rates would already have been potentialky lower as a result.

I contacted OFTM earlier today to ask what the new rates for Fixed Contracts would be as they had previously stated that the rates would be announced on 18th March.

The answer was " We don't know - the system will apply them from 1st April and we aren't publishing them before then".

    So we wait……..

Also, OTFM have withdrawn the offer of all Fixed Rate Contracts, as of today 19th March, "Due to the current uncertainty of Wholesale market prices" - I bet they won't be the only ones!

The flexible version of IOG is seeing quite a different change.

    For me:

    • Night & smart EV rate: was 7p/kWh, becoming 5.2p/kWh
    • Day rate: was 29.138p/kWh, becoming 27.871p/kWh
    • Standing charge: was 43.823p/day, becoming 47.707p/day.

Picking the fixed version earlier in the year looks to have been an astute move by Matt^3!

Somewhat lucky really, I took it out when they started offering fixes on IOG, so it only runs out at the end of August, not as long as if I had fixed in Jan or Feb this year, but still five months of driving and hot water so cheap it is basically free, which is great.

Those fixes restarted in April last year which when I jumped on it, and ended with the August '25 tariff, I don't think there has been a fixed option since then until the briefly available Feb '26 tariff (7.5p) which I was lucky enough to get as my follow-on when the April 25 fix expires middle of next month.

There's a fixed IOG option now, but it's 11.5p/kWh (going to be 8p/kWh from April) so it's not a clear winner.

What hasnt helped here is the communication, instead of the government saying its a 3.5p (inc VAT) discount. We got the old average annual cost discount, this means very little as different people have different usage patterns, different tariffs, some TOU, some non TOU.

I wasnt aware of the unit rate until I clicked switch my tariff on Octopus to see what would come up as I wanted to do a new gas fix. Octopus for electric then quoted a pre April and post April price and could see the unit rate differences between the two. Gas also has a discount as well which I think I posted in the Octopus fixed thread a couple of weeks back to help people.

I then noticed similar on EON, who actually quote the discount on their dashboard although for some reason they quote it exc VAT.

Some weeks later people were reporting the discount on fixed IOG, which was again 3.5p.

If only this was communicated properly from government, Ofgem and news media, then people could have made informed decisions, and another thing I noticed although Octopus quoted both rates on legacy tariffs, they only quoted pre April pricing on smart tariffs, so e.g. the GO fixed tariff quote was only pre April.

Flexible/SVR is more complex, the reason its not a 3.5p differential is the cap moved upwards a little bit so whilst its still cheaper because of the government intervention, its not 3.5p cheaper as the underlying rate has gone up.

I can offer an opinion, I kind of agree with QrizB its not a clear cut decision now. If e.g you signed up standard GO fixed earlier in the month you got 9p off peak pre April, and 5.5p off peak post April. I tried to tell reddit EV owners, they should get themselves on a fixed EV tariff, but they were all looking at the nice flexi quotes, and wouldnt budge until Octopus gave them a fixed quote. Now if you got 11.5p off peak pre April, which is only a few days, its still 8p post April, and the question is will off peak be higher than 8p on flexi IOG after July. I feel that is harder to predict as I dont know how Octopus allocate cost differences between their peak and off peak on IOG. But if we use fixed as a guide, I expect it would be 6-8p off peak, however there is going to be a correction, as the April-July period they are likely making losses, they will get compensated over the following 9 months. Luckily a new system just got approved by Ofgem, which from what I understand extends the compensation period from one 3 month period to 9 month period instead. (I may have misinterpreted this change, its very possible). I think if exit fee free, I would still move even with 3 months higher pricing, but they have exit fee's now. However another way of looking at it is, if the market doesnt get any worse over next 3 months, then similar fixes should still be there in 3 months, so if SVR exceeds the fix in July, but they stay the same, just wait until July to fix.
