Birth certificate dated over a year after i was born?

I was bought up by my mother who never wished to discuss my father-they were not married. I would like to find out more about him but have very few details-not even his name.
My birth certificate is dated over 12 months after my date of birth and Im wondering if my mother got a new one done without my fathers name on it, and destroyed the original because it may have had his name on? Its a long shot and we're going back 40 years, and its a Welsh birth cert(perhaps the laws were different?). Does anyone who knows anything about this type of research know if it might be worth me requesting a copy of my original BC-surely there must have been one as she could not have left it over a year before registering me. But would she have been able to get another one done just like that without the fathers details on, if the original one had had them on? I havent a clue where to start -any comments and help much appreciated.

Not that I know anything really about things like this but logic tells me that I would want to see what was written in the register rather than on the certificate. You used to be able to go to St Katherines House in London to look at the entry itself (I've seen mine!). Although this has now changed and it's no longer St Katherines House, there must be something similar. They register births, marriage and deaths for England AND Wales.

    Good luck with your search.

I'm not sure what date you are referring to on the date of the certificate?

Your date of birth will remain the same.

The date of the certificate a year later may be if your mother lost the original and this is a replacement certificate with a later date on. The details contained on the certificate would remain the same though - she can't have them taken off.

If your father was married to your mother then he wouldn't need to be present when she registered his name as the father. They assume the husbnad is the father. If they weren't married then he would need to be present or she could just put any name - Prince Charles for example.

You can get copies of certificates online - I was looking at the site only last night. I will look it up again and put the link for you.

here it is - you can obtain another copy of your certificate and see if there is anything different. There are also short certificates and full certifcates. I wouldn't however get your hopes up that you will gain any further info from this alone as it is highly unlikely to be different to the one you already have,

Is your mother still alive? If she is then I guess it is worth one more asking of her. If she's not, then do you have any of her papers? Was she the type of person who may have kept something about your father even if she didn't discuss it? What about any of her old school friends? have you tried friends reunited? You could look to see if there is anyone from her year who she may have kept in touch with during that time? what about a short requst in the local paper - we seem to have them here. Asking for people who knew your mother and seing where that gets you. Good luck.

When I went to get the long copy of my birth certificate it was shown as issued seven years later than my birth-which transpired to be the time my parents got married and the entry was amended to reflect the fact my birth was now legitimitised. I never asked to see the original entry as it held no surprises for me.
I believe that my entry up until that time was in my mother's maiden name and was then changed to my Father's at the time of their marriage so if you don't already have your mother's surname perhaps a search under that might yield the original entry (either her maiden name or first married name if she was previously married).

  • My daughter has had her birth certificate renewed a year after her 1st 1 was issued too. The new 1 has no parental details on it at all. Just name, date of birth, place of birth and date it was issued again.

I got a renwal after not receiving her original back for the passport agency. Maybe this was the same scenario with your birth certificate and your mother got it renewed. She may have lost it or opened a bank account and not got the original back.

Ask you mother or a family member. Im sure some on could shed some light on the matter for you.

    xx
  • Just a long shot but remember years ago, that if you werent married and the child was less than a year old you could change the name on a birth certificate..but it had to before a year old. Maybe this is why the one you have is a year later? Just a thought..is it over a year later or under or exactly?

If you were born illegitimately 40 years ago it would have been very unusual for the father's name to be on the birth certificate; not impossible but very unlikely.

thanks to all for your help. Ive had another look at BC-the registrar has signed and dated it it exactly 1 year and 1 week after my dob. Its got just my details on it-nothing stating mothers details either-isnt that a bit odd? or perhaps thats how they did it 40 years ago inWales.
Unfortunately its impossible to get any details from my mother and we are now estranged.

My son got married Abroad last year and he needed a full birth cetificate for this purpose. I had only paid for a short birth certificate at the time of his birth. If you ring up the local registrar's office for births, deaths and marriages (where your birth was registered) you can purchase a full copy of your birth certificate for £7. Presumably it would contain all the details registered at the time of your birth.
