I did a payment via First Direct, using the physical secure key (the process is basically identical to the HSBC physical secure key). It seems to have worked. The difference between yours and mine is that the last 4 digits of the " account" shown on the screen were all numeric for me.
As the 'account' shown seems to be some sort of virtual account/ collection account ( i.e. they state that you can't actually do a direct transfer into an account , therefore aren't given the details), it might be worth trying again in the hope of getting an all numeric number shown. Does seem a clunky system though .

I did try using the last 4 digits of the Tembo account number (all numeric) which is displayed up the screen, but it still failed for me for some reason. I swapped to using a different providers current account instead, I can't face failing this HSBC intelligence test every month!.

I'm thinking the same ! .. was going to cancel the direct debit and do an App payment on the 1st of each month, however I'm now thinking that life is too short for that faff. Will probably let the DD do the heavy lifting instead.

Tembo RS
I made my first payment using Direct Banking from my Santander c/a using the Tembo app. It worked instantly. I will make future payments manually the same way. It says when you open the account that you can't make payments by bank transfer or SO. Direct debit is possible, but it is too inflexible for regular payments into an RS (I think)

It's not me setting up a SO. As yet I don't even have the account I was merely pointing out why the bank won't process the SO until 2nd November.

Does this work if you're not the first named person on a joint account does anyone know?

@Slinky, yes it does, I’m second named on a joint Barclays account and went through okay 😊

Tembo RSYes, no problem here.

I’ll keep the DD for as long as the 8% lasts, as I’ll be funding those every month anyway. Should it drop I’ll have to look at it again.

Tembo
Have just opened an account for myself.
Has anyone gone down the route of opening an additional ISA and dumping £500 in it in order to be eligible to refer to other family members, etc? There seems to be a 13 day (at the moment) deadline to qualify. EA ISA rate is 4% and referral bonus could be £10-£1000 each.
