Thanks. I was on the website, couldn't find an app? At the end of the application, while still on the website, I was given their sort code and account number and a 9 digit "reference". It looks like the reference might be the account number but I'm not sure if I should do a test transfer when the account hasn't appeared yet.

This happened to me yesterday - I instantly paid the £250 using the sort code and account number that I was given on Manchester's website using that 9 digit reference number. I then logged back into Manchester to see a smaller, seven digit number as my reference! I sent a secure message asking if the funds would be transferred or if I should send the money again and await the return of my first deposit, but about two hours after this, I received an email saying that my funds had been received, and sure enough, when I logged on again, there they were!
I'm pretty sure that when they message me back they'll ask me to use the new reference (as opposed to the application reference) but I'm already on it and planning to do that from next month.
As it's now the weekend I wouldn't be surprised if your account doesn't show until Monday, by which time it should give you the proper seven digit reference. I'd wait till then - my experience has shown that you could pay with that nine digit application reference, but I don't think it'll get credited any quicker than if you do it on Monday as soon as the proper seven digit code is visible.
Hope this helps!

When requesting to close the account the bot gave me the instructions on how to do it myself. The bot asked if this had worked, so I said no. At this point I was directed to the real person. Exactly the same scenario for my partner. This is how most people "got around" no. 2 I believe.

I applied for still available Manchester RS issue 1 last night as a new customer. Got application reference but no second e-mail with log in ID. Guess it will be Monday before a human in Wallsend sorts that out.

if it helps, when I did made the deposit yesterday to Manchester BS, I used the 7-digit account number as the reference rather than the longer reference stated in the letter - both passed CoP, and I had a vague recollection from Issue 1 that the reference was only for the first deposit… deposit arrived fine without issues and I received sms/email confirmation about an hour later.

This is exactly my scenario too.
The positive thing is when they read the secure messages (and if they read this forum) they won't be able to distinguish between @CricketLady and myself 😂

Finally managed to get application done and accepted yesterday. Problem now that BoS gave warning yesterday of not matching details, and still the same today. Details I entered were correct, I checked using Zopa account and everything matched up. Wished I had made Zopa my nominated account now.
Anyone else had same problem with BoS/Halifax/Lloyds?0 -
I set my nominated account for ecology to zopa. However any payments were not sent, zopa said they were returned, but ecology said they never got there. Zopa said (probably ai) they weren't blocking. So I rang ecology and they changed the nominated account on phone why I was talking to them and I paid from another account and it was received while I was on a short 5min call.
Also if you previously had a ecology account and you applied with same email address it failed to submit on last page, when I rung ecology they deleted my email address from my legacy profile and I was then able to apply, ecology person apologized I have to reapply. However I was very impressed with the two ecology people I spoke to on the phone. Especially the change of nominated account done 5min before closing.

Yes same issue from Halifax too, so definitely a Lloyds/HBOS issue...
Application was easy enough, although I thought asking salary and job title was a bit intrusive, rarely ever get asked that for opening savings accounts. I'm sure even some of my current accounts don't know that info.
The intended deposit amount also wasn't clear if this was supposed to be a monthly or yearly figure? Most places do seem to ask that question now, so it must be part of some checks they have to do, or are they just trying to estimate their income?
