do you have to fund when opening? ideally, i'd like to open now and pay initial deposit on the 1st (to match all my RS).

You don't have to fund when opening, but the "maturity date" (i.e. date when 5% bonus ends) will be 12 months after opening. And each new "month" will reset on the anniversary of opening date. So no harm in opening now to fund on the 1st, but no benefit in terms of interest. You could wait until the 1st to open, but risk the account being withdrawn.

Very easy, external funding.
Via your bank.
Name Joe Blogs ( your name )
Use Sort code 090000
Acc 00050005
Ref , R12345678XYZ, I was given this as I applied.
The last 3 digits are your surname, Not given when applied.
Paid in £200 from First Direct, shows in the account within 1 minute.
But you get lots of warnings, unable to check etc.

Santander RS
Although doing an external transfer is against the T&C's so you risk the account being downgraded.
"We can switch your account to an Everyday Saver if you break the terms of this account. For
example, if you try to pay money in from an account that isn’t your Santander current account, or
if you deposit more than £200 in any month."Do Money Saving sites make you buy more bargains - and spend more money?8 -
FWIW I got confirmation of my new BucksBS account this AM. Setting up the new payee in my RBS CA and pressing send after the usual CoP/are you sure? has triggered my first Fraud Department Lock-Down in years.
Wonder why they picked this one?

Yes exactly the same for me despite setting up MBNA as a new payee last week and sending much more than £250...

That might be an issue as I don’t have a bank account with them, only savings via the app.
I did not think I could get the regular saver as was not available yesterday, but was in the options list today.
Time will tell.

Great news about the Santander RS.
Identical to the old Nationwide one which is now 6.5%.

I opened mine OK but when my wife tries she always gets the error "Sorry Something went wrong!".
