We hear you on quotations - it was the biggest issue last time and we expected it would be again.
But you decided to roll it out regardless!
In fact, instead of rolling the update out with a quote feature that simply is not fit for purpose, it might have been far better to roll out the update and disable the ability to quote posts entirely and simply say that quotes was not available.
There have been a couple of updates now where the outcome has been horrific and MSE just blame "the forum provider".
If "the forum provider" does not have a serviceable product, then it is entirely within the gift of MSE to select an alternative forum provider. There are many wholly workable forums that are not hamstrung by these shortcomings and blame on "the forum provider".
If MSE cannot change forum provider because they are tied to the current provider for some time period, then just keep everything working in the mean time and look for an alternative forum provider to come online when the agreement with "the forum provider" expires.
If the timeframe stuck with the current forum provider is disproportionately long, that is a commercial decision take by MSE and the choice now would be to stick with the inadequate forum provider or suffer the financial penalty of an early switch. All still within the gift of MSE.

a) The default is pasting as a quotation - the formatting is changed and horrible, and a URL automatically becomes a rich link, when a full URL is essential for searching. You simply can not make the post look good and user friendly.
The default behaviour is to make links into a 'Rich Link', but you should be able to make it into a normal link by clicking the link and selecting the first icon, as shown here

I know how to do it. I object to having to do it when I previously didn't.

Hi @Grumpy_chap
The WYSIWYG editor was on it's last legs the first time we attempted to switch over. We felt that it really had to be done at that time.
We have now delayed more than 2 and half years more! - as more and more user have complained that they can't post properly.
During that time continually advocated for a Quotation system more in line with what our members would like - and we will continue to do so.

There is one thing advocating for a functioning solution from the current provider.
If the current provider is unable or unwilling to provide a functioning solution, then the current provider is clearly not fit to offer a forum hosting service.
It is therefore the gift of MSE to change to an alternative provider. If the change is inhibited by a previous commercial decision to tie to the current provider for an extended period of time, then MSE have the business decision to make now to:
- change provider regardless and suffer the commercial impact of the early termination with current provider
- disable quotes all together
- simply roll out the non-functioning system.
MSE clearly chose the latter of the options.
Anyway, writing this post has highlighted another missing feature - there is no option within the editor to use bulleted or numbered lists. I could only create a "bulleted" list by using the "minus" dash.

The new quoting system is a huge step backward, it only allows quoting a post as one large bulk rather than splitting it up to reply to a post section by section. Additionally to make text bold or italic requires highlighting for the contextual formatting to appear which does not work properly on mobile.
This is not a "rich" editor, it is objectively less functional that the previous offering.

Hooray - quoting and deleting part of quotes has been recovered at 12:48:

Except, anyone wishing to read that will need to copy and paste the link into their browser address bar. Still, little steps.

I still can't Paste in the new editor after 2 hours of trying, Win11/Firefox, so none of the 'workarounds' to overcome the shortcomings of the new editor are open to me
On the plus side, Ctrl-left/right arrow now jump to the previous/next word like every other editor instead of start/end of line

This explains a lot. I thought it was a tech issue; clearly not.

Another common keyboard shortcut that works with the new editor is Cmd / Ctrl + K for turning selected text into a clickable link
@ColdIron - does your pasting issue happen on other browsers, or only Firefox?
