The issue with that is the contextual menu for bold and italic is messy on a mobile device, it appears very inconsistent when tested on Android devices and on a pc one can just the ctrl+B and ctrl+I for those functions so as it does not improve desktop and makes mobile worse it seems like another backward step.

Thank you, @MSE_Stephen. I find that the software is used by the Quicken forum, and (as one can see it without having to log in) I found a recent thread at In it, there is a post by jacobs Quicken Mac Subscription SuperUser, Mac Beta in October 2024 (which starts "@186kmph This thread asks Quicken Mac users to take a short survey about budgeting features . If you do so, you will be able to mention this feature." - I cannot link direct to it) which uses new-style quoting, but in a way which seems much more user-friendly than its appearance here, so presumably they have adjusted the code to achieve this for Quicken. The post links to an old post from 2021 where one can see the earlier quoting style, exactly the same as we were accustomed to; so whatever difference there is in the coding now can't have applied before the "upgrade".

Higher Logic Vanilla also claim Acer as a customer, and I found a totally different quoting style, from just two days ago, at .
MTA: Now, that link did not become live automatically, and I had to do it manually; whereas the link in my previous post made itself live at once.

That's not quotes. That's the 'threaded' or 'nested' format that will be available to soon.
(Going a bit off topic) There's a possibility we could try it in a limited way. For example, I thought it might be useful on 'Diary' posts, where the OP is making a daily entry, and other users are motivating them on that particular entry.
…but for general threads, it has the major disadvantage that you can't read from top-to-botton. It's more Reddit-style with branches going off in directions.Join the MSE Forum

That URL is not showing as a live link so we have to copy and paste it. This is basic stuff that is missing. It shouldn’t be happening. (Not your fault Grumpy, you shouldn’t have to do anything to make it a live link).
Your example post is exactly what I mentioned a few pages back. In you trying to quote parts of other posts, your post just looks horribly formatted (again not your fault). That’s the type of post I’m just not bothering to read now.

Ah, that would explain why it looks so different (and it clearly would not enable selective quoting, rather than including everything whether relevant or not). The Quicken one, however, does appear to be a quote, and it looks a lot better - and gives more information before being expanded - than the default which we currently have here.

I think MSE really needs to review its testing procedures before rolling out forum updates. Perhaps have some/more forum users testing potential changes before implementing them globally.
I find the new editor awkward to use on a mobile device. The use of nested options in the menu rather than being able to select individual buttons makes it virtually impossible to format a message easily/quickly - and where has the preview option gone?!
As others have said, quoting is a mess. You can't selectively quote from a previous post (at least not easily/obviously) and pressing the "down arrow" frequently does nothing if I did want to read the entire post being quoted.

I believe the Quicken one is showing that way just because it's a short quote. When someone quotes something longer, you can see the arrow appearing:

Yes indeed - but it is still showing three useful lines of text, without wasting the first two lines on the actual URL of the link, as is done here. The quoted comment is linked to from the date, so I see no reason at all to include the URL, which links to exactly the same place as the date. Is there a reason why the MSE implementation includes the URL of the quoted message, whereas the Quicken implementation has been able to remove it? Also, the Quicken quote does not have such wide margins left and right, so does not take up as much vertical space as the quotes here do, with (on my desktop) a good two inches of blank space on either side of the quote.

I have put another post where I have quoted parts of an OP's post with comments interwoven.
It looks awful.
It was hard to actually create.
Is it the aim of MSE Towers that we all leave the forum and find a new home?

Also, you get the joy of having to copy and paste that link to see what it is all about. Still, at least I can end with some extra emojis, well, just because we can now and that's about the only change that works.🤔🙈🙉🙊
There is another thing that could be improved - ability to insert consecutive emojis without needing to go to the emoji icon every time plus add a search feature within the emoji page to find the emoji wanted. I was going to use a "shrug" emoji but could not scroll far enough…
Maybe we could write a whole post in just emojis and hope that it is understood. Would probably be every bit as clear as the partial quotes.
