I'm going to start with this, from the "training manual".

One problem I forsee, is it wastes a lot of yarn, just practicing, because you have to keep cutting the yarn, so it becomes useless for anything else.

@Sea_shell - good opportunity to use up odds and ends (or a quick trip to charity/reuse shop for yarn :) To be fair I have undone a couple of rows (remember even if a couple of rows back you dont have to undo everything - just to where mistake was) and providing you keep same tension you can redo row - it does get a bit stressy on the last couple of stitches lol

How to join the new yarn in the starting BS?

Then when working FLDC, do you go 'down' through the loop, or 'up' through it?

Might have to resort to YouTube 😉

to join yarn it is standing double crochet - put slip knot on hook (like you would to start chain) put hook through both strands of first stitch of row (as you would for double crochet) wrap yarn round hook, pull through, yarn round hook and through 2 loops (as for normal double crochet)

I have used English terms - American = single crochet

FL means only put hook through front loop instead of both loops of the stitch you are working in

BL means only put hook through the back loop instead of both loops of the stitch you are working in (it leaves the front loop free to work in for when you do the next row double crochet/trebles)

Go up through the loop as you would with ordinary crochet

when i do through back loop I tend to hold my hook so the hook bit goes through first rather than the top of the crochet hook - I find it goes through better and does not split the yarn as much but it is what works for you. All the crochet stitches are done in exactly the same way as usual

I understand which are front and back loops, but when working the front loop, I'm still not clear if you push down through it, or up through it, if you see what I mean.

Back loop is an obvious, to me, downward motion.

@Sea_shell when you are holding your hook, front loop, you put your hook under (upwards) the front loop then up between the two loops, wrap yarn round and carry on :)

————back loop----Gap between———--front loop

hook goes in from here under front loop and up inbetween front and back loop

Hope that is ok explaining :) edited as did diagram which it has now put altogether!!!
