EDF FreePhase Dynamic Tariff

Afternoon all, I wanted to share an update on the FreePhase Dynamic formula.
Our goal with FreePhase Dynamic is to keep it as cost-reflective as possible – so customers can benefit from and optimise against market prices.
The tariff is designed to update ‘Coefficient’ and ‘Premium’ values each April, when most non-energy costs (such as network costs) are revised.
This April, those non-energy costs rose significantly, with the largest increase coming from the Capacity Market during peak periods. To reflect this, we adjusted our prices specifically to recover those increased costs.
If you’re interested, you can read more here:

However, we’ve listened to your feedback – we want to ensure the tariff remains competitive.
That’s why we’ve decided to revert Coefficient and Premium values back to their pre-April levels and we’ll keep this under review.
And as a thank you for your loyalty, we’re also giving all FreePhase customers 4 hours of free electricity tomorrow between 8pm – midnight.

Thanks for that - Excellent.
The 'under review' bit leaves the door wide open, but a result (for however long…?).
BTW, the SMS that I received said 20:00 - 23:00 for free electricity tomorrow?

It's probably because the pricing that is issued at 12.00 every day only covers up until 23.00 the following day.
There will likely be a notification of an hours free electricity midday tomorrow - from 23.00 to 00.00
Glad to see the coefficient is reverting. The Red period was becoming very uncompetitive compared to Octopus Agile which I was considering going back to.

That's good news. They'd registered my objection to the changes as a complaint, but I'm satisfied with their U-turn and will stick around. I do think they should get into the habit of notifying people of such changes. They manage to communicate good news like free energy very effectively.

Glad they’ve done this, I was on the verge of switching back to Agile… they definitely need to give sufficient notice next time.

The Freephase Dynamic FAQ has been 'updated', showing the reversion to previous C & P values.

The prices tomorrow do match up with the previous formula. I have just checked the C and P values and they have reverted to the original values. Last updated shown as May 2026.

The reason for the period of free electric tomorrow is to compensate for the 6 days of increase. EDF has acted on customer feedback. For this they should be commended.

I thought I'd come here to find out the reason behind the random period of free electric, and now am much better informed about how the tariff works! (For early adopters they wouldn't even tell us the formula when directly asked…)

They did eventually get back to me about the objections I raised. As predicted, they pointed to the second level link from the terms as justification for being able to make the change. They maintained it was simply a pass-through of increased upstream costs they were incurring, providing this explanation:
"The adjustments made in April were driven by a significant increase in non-energy costs (such as network costs), with a large increase coming from the Capacity Market during peak periods. These are costs outside of our direct control. If you’re interested, you can read more ."
That link seems to relate solely to energy bought years in advance, so it seems to be an argument related to those on ToU tariffs whose energy is bought in day ahead auctions cross-subsidising those on traditional hedged tariffs. I'm chalking it up as nonsense unless anyone else can decipher a link to this tariff.
On the lack of reasonable notice complaint, they only had this to say:
"We now recognise we should have communicated these changes more clearly and proactively. Additionally - following customer feedback - we have taken the decision to revert the Coefficient and Premium values to their pre-April levels to ensure the tariff remains competitive.
Your feedback is really valuable to us at EDF, and we are using it to improve how we communicate going forward."
I'm surprised they didn't mention the free period given to us by way of apology. They've certainly redeemed themselves in my eyes with the u-turn, the free energy, and the complaint-handling. I still think they should move the text about the C and P values being updated each April to its own FAQ, or move it above the long table of values, and include this information in the contract pack emailed to customers joining the tariff.
I think I shall take a capture of the webpage in its current state, just in case they decide to update it to allow themselves to vary the values again before April 2027.
