I joined the book club when I moved here as a way to meet people. And I've read some interesting books that I wouldn't have come across otherwise. I haven't liked them all, but that all makes for interesting discussion!

I'm another who can't cope with being told I'll love such and such a book. I wonder if it's a form of PDA? Perhaps a mild form, but the avoidance is real.

I think this is why book clubs do work for me - you're allowed to hate it! And that's okay. (in fact, much better than not having an opinion on it at all)

I record my books as I read them on Good Reads. The amount of times the books I’ve loved have been slated by others! I’m also wary of books that have won some sort of prize.

@sun_addict - me too on the books that win literary prizes. Usually seems to mean they are turgid, heavily intellectual and utterly depressing!

I recently read a book that was passed on to me by my mum who read it because it was her book group book and while it was fine and easily readable, me and her and her best friend were baffled as to how it had won a major prize.
If I was an author on the same nomination list who'd bothered to write a turgid, heavily intellectual and utterly depressing book, I would be so peed off!

Thank you everyone. The cinema trip was most enjoyable and I would definitely do it again. It wasn't even that busy considering it was Valentine's Day which helped and the film itself was interesting.
Next adventure is in another week or so…

You are going to leave us all wondering what's happening in another week or so, aren't you? 😊
Glad the cinema trip was a success.

this one is a birthday trip @Cherryfudge and I am continuing my apparent attempt to re-live my 20s by getting a train to a random city for lunch and a saunter with a friend with no particular agenda. In this case one somewhere up your way as it happens.
March is London to see an exhibition that we have tickets for, which reminds me I need to find a cheap train ticket while I still have the h4lifax cashback offer. Probably just going for the day but I will see if there is anything else on that would justify a stay over.
April starts with a trip to a northern city for my first standing live music thing since the 90s. Mixed feelings about this since I first realised how claustrophobic I am at a Wonder Stuff gig in Granby Halls in 1991.
The sun is vaguely shining here and I have plenty to be getting on with but I am feeling distinctly Februaryish - for anyone who reads Winter wonders OATs thread set up by @PennysIntoPounds
