There may be operability now but there wasn't a year or so ago.
A friend sent me some pictures, I replied with some of my own. 
I was charged 85p/message.
I'm on EE, he used an iPhone to send using iMessage, I didn't think and just replied, my mms went via RCS hence the 85p.
He's even older than me and won't use "apps" that don't come with the phone!
The rest of us just use Whatsapp.

Think you mean it didn't go via RCS rather MMS hence the charge?
