I have indeed opened an account with Barclays after switching another out. The account I switched out was opened in around 2018 and switched out in 2024 and was/is my leisure spending account with no DD's. I opened a new account later in 2024 when I decided to open an account for car spending. I have now switched that one as well. Not opened another since but I was initially considering opening another for this switch before realising I am obviously ineligible! Worth noting though I have a much older account and a credit card which have remained opened through all of this, so I have always been a customer one way or another. As pointed out though there's not really much you can do if a business doesn't want you as a customer, and they don't need to give a reason. Also if you are wanting a new account for the switch having already switched out you will not be eligible as you will have previously been a customer.Nasqueron said:
But it's a moot point - banks are a commercial operation, they are free to approve or reject anyone for any reason so long as it's not a protected characteristic. You were not debanked, they don't want you as a customer as they are free to decide.bmbm365 said:
The reason i asked if anyone has switched away from barclays then tried to open a bank account with them is because I believe 100% why their systems wont let me open a current account. So i was just wondering if anyone has actuall opened a bank after switching away from Barcalys as thats the only way i will change my mind as to why i was debankedNasqueron said:
Barclaycard and Barclays now use the same app, this was an issue flagged back when Barclays first did the switch offer a couple of years back as the Barclaycard app didn't work with Barclays bank so you had to download the Barclays app and then merge them, it was easy to dobmbm365 said:I had a whole heap of issues last time I tried to switch. Just wouldn't accept my ID. Had to go branch. Still wasnt allowed an account. I am a firm believer they have an issue in their systems that if you have ever switch away from them, they keep you in their systems. So when you apply for a new account it blocks you.
I will try again anyway this time around, although I have tried to get a barclays account for the last 3 years and they have rejected me. What's funny is they accepted my application for a Barclaycard! But thats a different app, so I assume a different system.
Has anyone switched away from Barclays and attempted to open a new account with them after?
If you just switched away but now want to switch back and use them, you should be ok but whatever anyone else did or didn't do is largely moot as each application is unique and Barclays won't, for example, change their minds if they reject you just because someone else did it successfully, equally if someone else was rejected it doesn't mean you will be

I'm bloody annoyed with Barclays, after trying unsuccessfully several times to open a new customer account using the app on her mobile phone, we finally managed it using the app on her big tablet, got the account details etc. on screen, but now the app won't let her access the account and on both machines we're stuck in an endless circle of registering as a new app user but can't as we don't have any of the things like debit/credit cards that their systems require for you to register!dealyboy said:

If you think you're the only one who's had problems doing a Barclays switch, you may want to read some of the many horror stories from their previous two switch offers!harz99 said:I'm bloody annoyed with Barclays

Yep ... during my failures I chose 'register the app' as an alternative to 'I am a new customer', I then selected 'I have a Barclaycard'. I failed the ID check but was able to 'Continue' to setup the app, including a check on my Barclaycard through a card reader. Amazingly the app ended up as a fully functional Barclaycard mobile app with no option to open a bank account.harz99 said:

Anyway I guess the debit card for the new current account will be arriving soon so you will be able to set the app up as a Barclays Bank mobile banking app and apply for the Barclays Blue Rewards and switch in your external account in good time.1 -
I know, I was part of that🙄 when I did the switch last time, but we have ulterior motives to squeeze money out of Barclays due to their part in the CCE debacle, so suffering with it, and as @dealyboy says when the debit card is with us it shouldn't be so much of a chore...I hope!danny13579 said:

Earlier in the thread I noted I had a Barclaycard app (also have a Barclaycard with a balance), with no option to add a bank account via it. So installed the Barclays app, and followed all the steps for the switching bonus.
Subsequently the Barclaycard app stopped functioning, so no app access to it. A few days on, now the Barclaycard account has merged into the Barclay app!
There was no information provided about this happening. I have now completed all the steps to obtain the switching bonus, I do hope that me being a prior Barclaycard customer does not impact the bonus.0 -
Once you've never had a current account with Barclays you're eligible for the bonus, assuming you've correctly fulfilled all the conditions of the offer.Altior said:I do hope that me being a prior Barclaycard customer does not impact the bonus.0 -
Not quite correct - if you had a current account which was open on 15th July 2025 then you're ineligible, but if you had a current account but closed it before that date then you're okay. Only applies to Barclays current accounts - credit cards, savings, or other accounts are okay.danny13579 said:
