Was wondering. What if one is on the BT light user scheme? Is this number barred, and if not would one get into trouble from using it? I suspect not, because BT still make revenue from it do they not?

If its not barred then once they realise what it is used for then they may move you to BT Together Option 1.

See this thread which covered this a bit.

tried this 5p number today few times.
    problems:
    1. cannot use it from cheap companies or my CPS provider
    2. connected via BT but quality on 5 ocassions i had to cut call after minute or so

    verdict:
cheap in theory but bloody waste of time and effort

    STAY WELL CLEAR!!
  • Just come across abroadtel
I'm interested as I'm off to France and it could be a cheap way for my wife to call me when I'm over there.

BUT - when I dial the numbers 0844 452 0005 at work I get a recorded message saying number has not been recognised. Is this because I'm dialing from my work network? Would the number be recognised from my NTL line at home?

The problem is that they are using a new batch of access numbers which some networks havent open up access to yet.If you use it from a BT Landline i have found it to be ok.

If you have got any technical problems like these https://www.dialabroad.co.uk want to hear from you, visit the site go to the contact page, and feel in a technical report to enable them to improve the service.Lets help them to help us with better rates.

Things to remember when using Abroadtel:

    There are 2 numbers:

0844 452 0005 for landline to mobile calls
0844 721 0001 for landline to landline calls

Once you dial the Abroadtel number wait for the prompt and dial the numbe ryou want to call, including the UK international dialing code. In other words dial 00 44 and then the number you want, dropping the first zero.

For Tesco Mobile Customer Services the number would be 0044 870 900 4455.

Have just used Abroadtel to call 2 0870 non-geographic numbers with no problems, saving 6p per minute on 1899's prices and 7.1p per minute on NTL's weekday daytime rate!

In fact as an NTL customer on the talk unlimited 24 package the only time I would not use Abroadtel to call a mobile or non-geo number is if I wanted to call an Orange Mobile at the weekend.

Using Abroadtel are you charged for getting through to their prompt even if the final number is engaged?
    e.g. to call a UK mobile...0844 452 0005 (pause for prompt) 00 44 (0)7939 xxx xxx *

As soon as they answer these type of access numbers the charging starts. So if you get the engaged tone the min call charge applies.

This was actually explained in the original posting on this subject see
