Found out that I can pay cash or cheques over the counter at the Halifax into my mortgage account - I've managed to pay 300.00 this month which is much more fulfilling than buying things I don't really need. Thanks to everyone for all the help and encouragement on this thread.

  • OK - I'm happy to admit we've overpayed in January by £2,595.81

    This consists of:
    • Cashing in shares £1000
    • Cashing Christmas & Birthday cheques £250
    • Withdrawing money from Paypal £260
    • Withdrawing money from poker accounts £250
    • Plus overpayments from salaries

Whilst we're very encouraged by this start we're aware that many of these are one-off overpayments so still plenty of work to do in February.

    Lessons learnt from Month 1
    1. Don't leave your money in other people's accounts (paypal/neteller/poker sites/etc), they pay no interest but you can bet they earn it on your cash (and it's easy to transfer it back there when you need it).
    2. Who needs new clothes and golf clubs? When family give you cheques, use them to pay off your mortgage. If they really wanted you to spend it on clothes/clubs they'd have given you vouchers:rotfl:
  • I have some slightly good news on the car front. The garage has contacted me to tell me the tcp!?? unit and connectors have gone and it will cost £180 + £50 diagnostics. I'm not too sure if these figures include vat or not. I was building myself up for a huge bill so things are not as bad as I had feared. I should be able to cover this, but I know I need a new tyre and hubby's car needs a service.

However, I still have a rubbish internet connection where I an unable to access most site, especially sites where I have to log in. (Although aol believe as I can access bbc online and google I have full working internet) It does mean I can't log into by online banking accounts to keep an eye on things. It's payday for us both on thurs so I am looking forward to sitting down, working out how much I need to spend on car related things and how much I can overpay. YAY!
  • Wow, that's fantastic daft pegasus! I always feel pretty poor in January from paying out for Xmas, so that's an amazing start.

Glad to hear the car bill isn't too bad NMS. I've got a dentists bill coming up next month: it's so depressing having to pay out for really BORING stuff isn't it.

On a better note, I called our mortgage company to check about overpaying and any penalties and they said although we can only overpay by £500 per month without penalty during our fixed rate period, we can opt to shorten the term without penalty as long we don't pay it off in full so we can effectively overpay by a lot more. But I'll stick to my £6000 target for this year.
