Monzo and Starling have the best apps by far with notifications, pots, direct debts showing up before they are taken. Halifax have notifications but they are very poorly implemented and can take over an hour to show up sometimes. Nationwide are hopelessly old fashioned and just have a rudimentary app which is way behind what anyone else offers.
But for usability the Nationwide app trounces the likes of Santander, HSBC and Barclays to name but three.

Not from what I've seen, when my daughter wanted to set up a new payee on her Nationwide app she had to go and find the ridiculous card reader they still use.
My main bank is NW and I always say I have have no problems with them and would recommend to anyone but that reliance on the card reader has to go! (I actually have 3 now, 1 for work, 1 for home and 1 for my bag because of course I never had it on me when I needed it)

It depends what's important to you I suppose. I had an account with them last year to get a swtich bonus. The app worked ok but was so archaic compared to what other banks offer there is no way I would use them for my current account.

Monoz and Starling are good, but I am even more happy with Revolut, especially for their currency exchange options.

We found Nationwide truly awful. The account had been up and running for 2 weeks and no sign of the card reader, so no way to move money out of the account . When I enquired about this it was because we hadn’t requested one . 🤷‍♂️

I'm a long-time customer of Nationwide and my card reader is gathering dust in a drawer somewhere. I haven't been asked to use it for a very long time because their app lets me authorise transactions. Perhaps this is different for new customers.

It might be that the card reader is only needed for setting up new payees, do you need it for this?

No, I've set up lots of new payees and not needed the card reader for years. I have biometrics enabled in the app and sometimes need to authorise it that way, but never by card reader.

It was the card reader that made me ditch Nationwide. I had set up biometrics in the app that was supposed to replace the card reader. I removed the card reader option to use biometrics. Was perfectly fine for a while. Then out of the blue when making a regular card payment, it wanted the card reader, which by then I had no idea where it was. Switched to Monzo afterwards and never looked back, everything is miles better.

I've just had bad experience with Halifax so I'm looking at changing account too.
I have a chase and monzo account for spending, online foreign purchases and holidays but always need a main current account as a base.

Halifax didn't do notifications, despite it being on. They never appeared for me. Requesting a payment was OK but sending money was still old fashioned where you needed their bank details, same with chase. Monzo excels here where you can just send them a link instead. Much easier.

I'd like a main bank account, one of the main High Street banks that is, which has an online banking app fully featured like these online only banks. One as good as monzo perhaps?

100% notifications, easy sending and paying requests ideally not just bank detail methods. Just nice funky apps in general really

Any other perks and bonuses are ofcourse a bonus

Natwest has all these: >100% notifications, easy sending and paying requests ideally not just bank detail methods

You can make a link for people to pay you (up to £500). Has saving pots etc. Honestly feel like they are under rated for high street bank which has all the digital bank features and they frequently are adding new stuff.

Im like you and use Chase & Barclays CC for spending/travel etc. but just use Natwest for salary and stuff.
