changing from warm air heating to radiators

I've just bought a flat with a J&S IT19-25mk2 heater - yes, I know it's ancient.
When I bought the place the previous owner indicated that the unit hadn't been serviced in the 2 years he was there (although he was only there for around 5 days each month) and he couldn't supply any documents. However, there's a sticker on the unit from a J&S registered company that mentions the unit needs servicing again in March 2012. Was there ever a time when it was considered these units didn't need an annual service - could the sticker be quite old??
I've just checked the air filter and that's clean.
I've also downloaded the user guide from the J&S website and it mentions on there that sometimes the pilot light will need to be relit (such as when the electric supply is switched off I thnk). This seems to be behind the front panel but I can't seem to be able to open it - it seems stuck at the bottom but I don't see a catch.
I wouldn't light it yet. As a rule, I never just assume the gas appliances in a new house work properly and safely, even if they're really newly installed and look fine. Get it serviced first, even if it means no heating or hot water for a day or two. Ideally you'll have a chance to do this before moving in, but even with limited time if you plan ahead you can probably book an appointment for the day after you move in.0 -
I moved into a house a few months back with warm air. Currently renovating a coupe of the rooms, but before we get too stuck in need to make a plan on the eventual heating system.
Called J&S and had one of their approved installers come out, if tried to talk me out of warm and said go wet.
Do most of you with warm air have it heat you hot water as well? At present I have warm air for house, and an immersion tank and electric shower.. I can't see they £4000 outlay for a wet system will come back to me very quickly against the additional electric bills0 -

Yes , heats up a tank , with two daughters I had a larger tank put in this year.
We also have a power shower in the ensuite.
To get this straight , you want to rip out a working warm air system , on the advice of a J&S
contractor at the cost of £4000 ................WHY?0 -

No this is exactly what I don't want to do. I was hoping for someone who would give me a cost of adding water heating capability to the system I have. Instead he said go wet for the bargain of £4,000.
The boiler is old, so I imagine if I did want hot water capability from it would mean a new boiler and janus system anyway.0 -
Glad you made that clear.
Sorry can't help , my normal advice would contact J&S , but you already have.0 -
No he hasn't, he contacted an approved installer.
Just because they are a contracter for J&S doen't mean they want to install J&S's warm air heating.
They will probably make more profit installing a wet system.
And I have J&S's warm air heating and I wouldn't change it for radiators.
What central heating system can have your house nice and warm minutes after turning it on?
I agree I have warm air heating and I love it. It gets warm within minutes in the winter. One day we'll have to move and I will dread going back to radiators!0 -

What do you expect from J&S ?? you ring them up , then send someone .
Ring them up BUT ask for a second opinion??
Get back to J&S and tell them .......... the muppet you recommended wants to install a system completely at odds with your tried and tested?0 -

As Wallbash suggests I called J&S and the contractor they sent wasn't very helpful.
Trying to find more companies as we speak to have someone else have a look.
Just keen to know if people use it for water heating or wheather they use immersion/electric showers for this?0 -
I live in Hertfordshire , if anyone lives close , and they want to know who I trust, pm me0

We have a 30/40 year old Controlaire warm air heating system, and have had problems with the pilot light lighting in recent weeks. Having already had 2 new thermocouples installed, we are now being told that it requires a replacement pilot injector and thermocouple, but as they are no longer produced, the gas engineers cannot source any. Does anyone know where I would be able to get these parts, as I like the warm air heating and am loathed to spend several thousand pounds on a new heating system.0
