my warm air unit has broken down today, yesterday there was a slight squeaking coming from the unit when it started blowing warm air.i am assuming the motor has gone.does anyone know an approimate cost for this please?
It's a Johnson & Starley JT 19-25 mk2, or should I think about replacing the whole unit..Thanks
When you say its stopped working, has it stopped blowing any air?
Have you tried to move the fan in case something is jamming it?If you found my post helpful, please remember to press the THANKS button! --->0 -

Not yet, earliest I can have a look is tomorrow afternoon after work.
Yes it's stopped blowing air, if i turn up the thermostat I can hear the gas ignite.
Usually the motor kicks in not long afterwards.
the squeaking sounded like dry motor bearings, or like my tumble drier did when I opened it up and found enough fur to make a carpet:o0 -
Yeh it could just need servicing but usually its the motor thats seized or burnt out.
Usually they get noisy though for a while so it could be something else wrong with it,
Dont operate it if theres no air blowing. If you found my post helpful, please remember to press the THANKS button! --->0 -
Thanks , will check on replies tomorrow as i'm just off out to walk the dog, then going to bed .
p.s Wife says she heard it making a noise last week! NOW she tells me!!0 -
Sounds like the motor,
Just need to get a heating engineer to replace the motor, shouldnt be a big job so therefore shouldnt cost too much.
This is the part you require if it is the motor:
http://www.johnsonandstarley.co.uk/spares/partdetails.asp?part=BOS02064SP
Give them a ring to see how much it costs to buy the part
I found it on this site for you, this site seems cheapest, not sure if u would get cheaper direct from manufacturer.
http://www.keeptheheaton.com/acatalog/Johnson_Starley_Fans.html
Order Code: 115055 Johnson & Starley BOS02064SP Fan Assembly
Fan Assembly WFFB0905-026 (397-947) (Excluding: VAT at 17.5%) </SPAN>
BOS02064
£171.48 including VAT
Some sites charging upto £250 for the same part!
Not sure how much someone would charge to replace it but might be a good idea to get it serviced at the same time.
Other than that only other cheaper repair I think you could get done is to have the motor replaced by a company that makes fans who would strip the fan down and replace the motor. If you found my post helpful, please remember to press the THANKS button! --->0 -
Richard, thank you for your replies, I now have a good idea of what it's going to cost me, I'm going to call in my local company as last time we had a problem they replaced the gas valve ( bos01301), and total charge for this was £152. their initial call out charge was £60 and then charged me £92 to supply and fit the valve, bearing in mind that this was in March 2006.
I have just checked the price of Gas valves and they are £100 + vat. so I think they seem like a good firm. I also think you are right about the service, it's about time I set up a regular one.
what I will do is post a report on how much all this costs me, for the benefit of others.
I will also post in the Praise, Vent and Warnings Board. Depending on what happens, will decide which section they go in.0 -
Yes im sure they will be worth using if you have had good service from them before.
The fan is probably something you could replace your self if you had a bit of time as it doesnt have anything to do with the gas part of it... however its probably fiddly.
I guess if its an old boiler and this is the original fan then it has done well.
Get them to give the systema good service and clean out as this may boost performance.
Are there air filters you clean regulary yourself? If you found my post helpful, please remember to press the THANKS button! --->0 -
well, called the local company and they can't get someone out till Tuesday afternoon.
But the call-out charge is still only £60, for that they can come and diagnose the problem and I'll take it from there.
I took a look at the fan and it moves freely, although there is a lot of dust etc on/in it.
yes, looks like a fiddly job.
There is a large filter which slots in horizontally that I clean every week, Every couple of months I take off the vent covers and clean as much of the ducts as i can.
I beleive this unit is very old, waiting for J and S to get back to me.0 -
Sounds like the motor has gone to be fair, so your prob looking at £200 ish for part and repair etc.If you found my post helpful, please remember to press the THANKS button! --->0

a fan can last 10-20 years depending on use. sometimes loud noises may be caused by the 3 rubber mounting bushes hardening allowing the rotor to foul the housing. re-positioning these can often help extend life of the fan by a few years
eh? Of course the fan is an integral part, it blows the warm/cool air around the house.:rotfl:
And thank you, I am very competent . I got my first qualification in servicing back in 1994. The way I see it, I could replace it but because I'm not in the trade there would be no guarantee.and for the sake of £60 quid I get 12 months Guarantee and someone gets a couple of hours work.
If you came out to me and only repositioned any rubber mounting bushes that had hardened, and I caught you, you would be out of the door before you finished the job. what good are they once they are hard?
And if you read my post properly I said that the fan moves freely.0
