  • PS anyone know the best way to 'cover' the old air vents in the walls and ceiling. Remove and plasterboard?
  • I have just been told that my 32-year-old warm air central heating boiler is now dead and has been declared unsafe by British Gas. I have been advised to have it replaced by Johnson & Starley, who seem to be the only people in this country still supplying these boilers. I am in the process of getting quotes from their approved installers, but it seems they (both J & S and installers) are very unwilling to tell me the actual cost of the boiler (so I can judge which installer is giving me a better deal). They will not sell me the boiler direct and I cannot find anyone else with whom to compare prices. I understand warm air heating is no longer "the in thing", but I am happy with it and do not wish to have the expensie and upheaval of putting in a wet system. Does anyone know of another approved supplier of these boilers in the UK?

Maybe another option to explore could be an air to air heat pump and utilise the existing ducting network. Might be worth giving your local Air Con company a call and get them to pop round to see if it's a feasible option.

    Hi,

This thread has been an interesting read as I am looking at buying a house with warm air heating. As a query, is this similar to the central air heating systems which are used all over the US/Caanda? I know they have a cooling facility but was wondering if in principle they are the same and whether an air cooling facility could be added - for the 2 or 3 very hot days we have each year ;)

    Thanks in advance

Did they tell you exactly what's wrong with it? I suspect they could have almost made it up, to try and get you to spend £1000s on a new system. I don't trust them an inch. The warm air systems are so simple there's virtually nothing to go wrong and, if it does, they should be easy to repair, as long as parts are still available for your model.

What total and utter rubbish on virtually all counts, bg will get absolutely nothing for advising that johnson and starley should install a new system...
Nothing to go wrong except for a cracked heat exchanger blowing carbon monoxide out of every vent in the house in the event of a fault, blocked water circulators with soot from the pilot light, noisy super expensive fans, permanent pilots x 2 £££, dust in suspension etc etc. I have attended more carbon monoxide incidents from these awful creations than even fires!.
That said new ones are better and the room sealed ones better still.
With johnson and starley as a rule the white ones are full of brown asbestos and the beige ones are ok but ring them with the serial number and they will tell you.

I assume you're one of the people I don't trust, so your reaction is entirely predictable.

Yes I am but at least I'm spouting fact rather than totally groundless incorrect opinions and suspicions.
  • Hi Guys, I'm new to this and have found this Topic really interesting.

I'm in the process of buying a 3 Bedroom house in Redbridge, London... It has a Warm Air System but want to really put a Combi boiler and Radiators around the house (also planning an extension). How would I find out if the Warm Air system has asbestos materials used and how would I go about getting it removed and CH being installed?

    Thank you :-D
  • Hi
I had my warm air heating unit condemned today following a routine service. From what I can gather the reason is due to the fumes spilling back into the flat rather than going up through the flue. The guy showed me using smoke matches. My question is how much would it cost to replace this kind of heating? Does it need replacing?I dont really want radiators as I live in a flat so installation of pipework etc would be an issue.
By the way the system I have is a Johnson and Starley J25-32 Mk3 Modairflow
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
