Today is a good day! It is 3 and a half years since we moved into this house and the scaffolding on next door (and the house they are joined onto the other side) that was there when we moved in is finally being removed today! 🎉 It is a complete eyesore, partially blocks the access to my rear garden, and honestly I thought it had become a permanent feature, but not after today! I am not sure if that means the house next door is deemed ‘fixed’ (it certainly doesn’t look finished as half the render is still missing), but it turns out the horrible man who lived next door but one (who tried to get into my house while being off his head and not wearing anything below the waist!), has in fact sold his house and it appears that the scaffolding was his! I know because I caught what I thought was a builder (turned out to be the new owners dad), and commented on how they’ve made a great job of the front of the house (which has been fully rendered and the bright pink front door has been replaced with and black one, then everything painted). It means they have also rendered and painted the dodgy brickwork on the back of the house so it leaves just my neighbours house looking dodgy rather than giving the impression that all the houses are impacted. 👍 Turns out the guy who bought it is literally doing it up and reselling, so it will be very interesting to see what it sells for. Now all I need is for someone to do the same to next door’s house and all the house prices in the row should benefit. 😁
Honestly, I never realised how much the scaffolding bothered me but already my living room feels brighter now more sun can reach it! 🎉 Time for a coffee to celebrate. 😁

Oh, that's very good news! My mind was boggling at the cost of having scaffolding up for three years plus, but if it was his own, I expect that wasn't a factor. How lovely for you to be free of it!

I have spent the entire day randomly staring at the sky from my living room window! I still can’t quite believe how much of a difference the scaffolding being removed has made. I swear it is like someone having an extension knocked down because I keep wondering where the rest of the building is. 🤦♀️ I am sure I will eventually get used to it, but honestly, having never previously seen the view without scaffolding, it feels really weird. 🤣
Anyway, since today was quite a cold day I decided to pause the outside stuff and spend the day working on my CV, my LinkedIn profile and applying for jobs. As much as I really would like to never work again I thought it useful to have everything updated and ready-to-go in case I spot any jobs that tickle my fancy. That was my plan anyway. Then, having spent so many hours getting everything updates and feeling a bit like I was ‘all dressed up with nowhere to go’, I decided to apply for a few. None of which were really what I wanted but technically they were all in the right ball park so I figured it couldn’t hurt. Now, knowing how my usual job hunting goes, it will be just my luck and I’ll end up in one of those ‘not quite right’ jobs! I never seem to get the jobs I really want and I always end up sending random applications in like this and it is those jobs I end up getting! 🤦♀️ Must stay strong this time! If it is not right I should say no. 🤞 The reality is I still haven’t even officially left the current job so I have time to be picky but I get carried away as I just hate the process and want it over with. Then I generally take a job and regret it. 😞
Still, it was a good job getting everything updated if nothing else. 😊

Oh you've just described my luck with jobs! I didn't apply for my current job, I applied for something completely different and they said I was unsuccessful but would I like this one. Not surprisingly, I'm currently job hunting as it hasn't worked out. I also hate job hunting so I sympathise with your situation. Good luck!

After my flurry of job applications yesterday I have decided to go back to just applying at universities again. The problem is that means I will also certainly have to travel a ridiculous distance but the chances of getting reasonable adjustments made to enable me to wfh most of the time is fairly high so there’s that. I do like working at unis so I think that is just a price I will have to pay.

Chiming in again to say I've also realised I miss working in a university and that is my focus! Wishing us both success, fortunately I'm certain we won't be fighting over the same posts 😄

It’s funny how universities feel so different isn’t it? The only problem is they are so few and far between that it often means having to look much further from home than if you just look for a more general job. 😬
As usually happens, I have now received an offer of a telephone interview for a job I applied to which is isn’t a university sadly. The pay is less than I should really be looking for but it is a job I could see that I might genuinely enjoy (and in theory be less stressful), so I thought worth a shot. I can see how it would help fill in some gaps on my cv that might make it easier to jump up in the direction I really want to go even after a year of doing it, so I think it would be worth the short term sacrifice. Plus, if I get a job quickly then I effectively just pocket the leavers cash and that would make a substantial dent in the debt! 😁 It would of course mean I have to actually turn up every day and do a job, but I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it! 🤣
