    Aren't ordinary people far better off just using Facebook marketplace instead?

    Seems to be the default place people look for stuff, and you get paid straight away any way you want.
    I also use FB marketplace but the footfall there is tiny compared to ebay and everyone literally wants stuff for nothing. For me it certainly isn't the default place to look. I spent just shy of £100 on ebay yesterday on some hobby items, I checked ebay and Amazon - Amazon had one of the items I wanted but second hand from private sellers using the Amazon stock photo only  - but I found a private seller on ebay that had everything I wanted and when looking at the photos seemed to be selling in very good condition-and very cheap, so I bought the lot. It didn't even occur to me to try FB. Interestingly I did not pay a buyer premium so that's another category that it hasn't been rolled out on yet.

    Out of interest I just looked on marketplace, I could buy just 2 of the things I wanted on there, I would have needed both posted as neither seller was remotely near me. One seller's photos were stock photos from a website (I didn't think that was possible?)  but says bank transfer only so that's a no from me, the other only has one very poor photo and virtually no info - just xxx widget as seen - so that's a no from me.

    As for selling 99.9% of my items are posted out, so if I did sell something on FB I would have to factor in paypal fees anyway. I have sold a few things on Facebook groups this week but have obviously taken paypal G and s as the sites I use require that, and I would always offer that anyway.

    Why use PayPal on marketplace???

    Bank transfer is free and safe for sellers
    Asking for bank transfer screams scammer, a real red flag. If you routinely use bank transfers to pay total strangers then please be very cautious , you are basically giving a complete stranger cash.

    Yes it definitely looks like it is constantly rolling out to more categories.

    Yes I had a couple of books on sale starting at 99p, now says £1.75. Must admit can’t work the maths out!  But I think it’s the end of low price items being sold on EBay, presumably that’s what they want.

    For offers the following applies where x is the item price in pounds and pence and y is the required offer price

    y = 1.04 * (x +  0.75)

    This may help to make sure you get the offer price you want.

    I don't do Facebook - at all.

     same for me
  • i sell on ebay  as a private seller  , about 10 items a week puely as a hobby  and to clear out items i've collected over the years  (i;m 76 )  i have to say not happy with the new payment system   but thinking about it  in the past I HAD THE SOLD ITEM  AND THE BUYERS MONEY  so the risk was on the buyer  ..it's now shifted    i'm happy to see how it goes but worry about buyers saying  item hasn;t been recieved  ( ON NO SIGNED FOR ITEMS )  .i can't see what pressure EBAY can do to help sellers to check ..i'm currently £138 in pending monies  i'll report back in a month

    The buyer fee stuff is a complete mess. As a private seller I feel confused on where to price something because the buyer fee just increases the cost so I may be more expensive then others straight away - or when sending an offer etc.
    I feel I have to take the buyer fee into consideration within my price now, so its like I'm taking the hit on the fee indirectly since I'm having to lower my listing price in the first instance. It's not really a buyer fee at all.

    Just testing this formula with an actual example i.e where x is the item price in pounds and pence and y is the required offer price

    One person made an order as follows:

    What your buyer paid

    Subtotal
    £8.92
    Buyer Protection fee
    £1.08
    Postage
    £3.25

    Order total
    £13.25

    Now
    £1.08 + £8.92 = £10.00

    To get 1.08 we know that 75 pence of this is the flat fee. This leaves a total of 9.25. To calculate the variable part (33p) we can
    We also know 1 percent of 9.25 is 9.25 / 100 = 0.0925

    so either

    y = 1.04 * (x +  0.75)

    so where x is 8.92

    y =  1.04 * (8.92 + 0.75)

    y = 1.04 * 9.67

    y   = 10.0568 (5/6 pence out)

    Lets figure out what percentage we need to make up the values:

    y = x * (8.92 +.75)
    y / 8.92 +.75 = x

    x = 1.03412616

    y =  1.03412616 * (8.92 + 0.75) = 9.99 (not bad)

    or

    y = (1.04 * x) +  0.75 = 10.0268 (2/3 pence out)

    We can see the second value is closer but still out by a couple of pence.

    We can also reverse this to find the value of x where x is the item price in pounds and pence and y is the required offer price

    With 4%

    so x = 10 / 1.04 - 0.75 = 8.86 (10 out)

    With  3.3%

    y = (1.03412616 * x) +  0.75)

    y /
    1.03412616 = x +  0.75

    x = y / 1.03412616 - 0.75

    so x = 10 / 1.03412616 - 0.75

    x = 9.68 - 0.75 = 8.92 (correct)

    I'm not sure where your maths is coming from. I think you mean y= (1.04 * x) + 0.75

    However 99p * 1.04 = £1.03 then +75p =£1.78 which I think is what RedImp was expecting.

    Your formula would be;
    Y = 1.04 *(0.99 + 0.75)
    1.04 * 1.74 = 1.81

    As you are adding 4% to the fixed element of the fee.

    Even if ebay are rounding down the offer price should be £1.77 not £1.75
