I have a smart meter.  Fitted when I had a choice of digital or smart.  It serves me well and I like my ihd.
But I respect the legitimate concerns of others - sone of which the industry and Ofgem seem only too keen to drive us towards.
If the govt wants 100% smart metering then it should say so explicitly.
And vote for mandatory fitting of them in the house - so objectors can have a clear line of complaint to their elected representatives.
There was a post recently suggesting one supplier now offering £150.
Will the 33m existing amart meter users get that refunded too ?  It would only be fair.

When the roll out started legislation - iirc actual WM legislation - not unelected Ofgem guidance - made it clear smart meters were not mandatory.
That may have changed - but would have expected more news coverage if had.
But then the change to DAPF hardly made headline news.
As half hourly data reporting protection from DAPF has been abandoned as the default position in Ofgem's - arguably driven by industry - drive to more comprehensive Half Hourly Settlement - so is now opt out not opt in.
People were warned over a decade ago of the potential outcome of TOU - like the recent example days of £1 cap kicking in on Agile.  That not everyone can easily work their life so power usage schedules around.
I wonder if we will be getting the same number of reminders that can opt out that I get to opt in.  I somehow doubt it.

I just wanted to pop back to thank everyone for all the very helpful comments and advice you gave me on this thread. Octopus finally escalated my issue to a senior meter expert, at my request, and have finally confirmed after 2 years of badgering me that it is NOT an RTS meter! What a result!!

I'm glad that you finally got through to someone who knew what they were talking about, rather than someone with a script :)

No, it has a mechanical clock on the right. It's not an RTS meter. However, that fossil will be way past its certification date so they'll still want to swap it for a smart meter. You could try ignoring them and see how you long you can go but ultimately, it will get swapped at some point after the RTS meter replacement backlog has been dealt with.

That really is an antique. Together with the mechanical timeswitch it would make a good museum exhibit!

@MBR1 I used to have a timeswitch (clock) exactly like that to control my original off-peak tariff :D
The clockwork back-up wasn't working so over the years with various power cuts it was about 3hrs late.
Check yours, you may be getting your off-peak starting later in the night and finishing later in the morning. The pointer at the bottom of the dial just above the red section (the 6 o'clock position) will indicate the time.

Anyway, it's not an RTS meter as has already been said, send a copy of that photo to EDF and tell them it's not an RTS meter, so there's no panic in changing it, it can wait until those with RTS meters are all done!

Hello all, I'm a forum newbie and impressed with the knowledge you all have on the topic of RTS. Like many forum members I'm with Octopus and for over a year I've been getting emails warning me that my meter is a RTS and will not work well after the June switch-off. I'm doubtful my meter is actually an RTS type and have sent emails and photos with no responses to confirm the type. I have even asked for an engineer to call when in the area (Suffolk) but this request has been refused. Here's a pic of the meter which was fitted when we built the house in 1992. The meter cabinet is on an outside wall about 30mtrs from the nearest building. Cannot see any RTS markings and the time readout in the display that sits below the meter is a few hours fast!

Help: Is it an RTS meter?

I'm reluctant to move to a Smart meter because of all the bad press and with a 10-20% failure rate reported in the recent press/TV progs I'd rather stick with reliable old-school tech. Happy to be convinced otherwise, I'm not a total Luddite :)
