I can remember ds1 (who is about to be 30) saying to ds2 whilst being fitted for a school blazer "You don't know how lucky you are that everything you have is second hand"

My kids used to love the hand me down bags i used to get from a friend as she bought branded stuff. I didn't so my kids loved the bin bags coming in“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

I used to love jumble sales, I used to have fabulous vintage jewellery picked up at them - sadly all gone now mainly due to ex and clearing but nice memory.
Popped into local charity store, picked up an unused candle for £1 but was so struck with how tatty and exhausted everything was. Lady in front of me bought a nice jumper, which I think was possibly the one good thing there. It struck me as sad really that exhausted clothing is being donated, so unfair on the stores (I know this one has a strict turnover policy, if it does not go within a few weeks it goes off with the ragman).
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!11 -
In case anyone is wondering about where to go for their next trip I spotted this article in today's Guardian which might give you some ideas ‘Fabulous 50s dresses and even a kilt’: readers’ favourite vintage shops and markets in Europe | Shopping trips | The Guardian10

I found a few bargains today. T-shirts were reduced to £1 so I bought a couple for my husband for layering. I found some new slippers, two candles and a khaki jacket, top and roll neck as I read that khaki is the colour for this Autumn.2025 GOALS

Hello all,
Some nice things found today...
- a red cap by Lonsdale. No branding on it and is made of a brushed felt material (so for colder weather). It's bright red, and I have a bright red wool jacket, so it will go well with that. £6.99
- Barely worn Fat Face slipper/boots for MIL's stocking - £4.99
- A Sweaty Betty running top. Brand new, a splurge at £30, but I love SB and it also holds its value well if you sell on Vinted.
- The bargain of the day: a pair of 100% merino wrist warmers by a Danish brand called by basics. Thin, soft and very warm and £1.99!
I'm off on a mini break this weekend near Bridlington; if anyone has any charity shop recommendations nearby, let me know! M1008 -
I love going to the charity shops in Brid magpie100
There are 3 quite good ones (one is Cat Protection) which are next door to each other on Quay Street and another two (one is the RSPCA) up on Prospect Street.
I hope you'll make time for a walk along the beautiful beach and have some of the best crab in Europe!
Have fun!

There was an outgrown clothes box at the baby clinic, which had a couple of pairs of dungarees in corduroy & the receptionist nodded me to go have a look as she said my lads would look stunning - she was right, deep jewel tone purple & green, solid blocks of colour, worn over t shirts and when the youngest outgrew them, I washed them & put them back in the box, as they still had life left - corduroy is an amazing fabric!
Bridlington for crab, eh? Himself always wanted to give it a try, but we never got around to it. I may haul the lads up to Brid and have a family meal. Having riffled the charity shops for the odder bits of Denby (Middleson is a ruthless chairman of the Acquisition Committee & asks the awkward question "haven't you already got one?"...)8 -
@Working_Mum thank you! I'm so excited after reading your post! We're taking the dog (very lively collie) and he LOVES a beach. Partner loves crab, and I love charity shops! Can't wait.
@DigForVictory I thought of you today when I saw sone Hornsea in a charity shop!7 -
When I was expecting eldest, a friend whose son was then almost 12m old, gave me 2 bin bags of baby clothes. Both boys wore those things - flannelette nighties (ideal for changing nappies in those early weeks!), jewel coloured BabyGros, cotton rompers, dungarees, pram suits and vests. With the knits provided by my mum & MiL, they were well set up and it saved me a fortune.DigForVictory said:There was an outgrown clothes box at the baby clinic, which had a couple of pairs of dungarees in corduroy & the receptionist nodded me to go have a look as she said my lads would look stunning - she was right, deep jewel tone purple & green, solid blocks of colour, worn over t shirts and when the youngest outgrew them, I washed them & put them back in the box, as they still had life left - corduroy is an amazing fabric!
Again, when youngest outgrew things, I passed them onto my health visitor at the baby clinic for her to pass on to families in need (late 1980s, so HVs still existed then).2021 Decluttering Awards: ⭐⭐🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇 2022 Decluttering Awards: 🥇
