The worst thing is that Octopus claim to have green credentials
But are not wiing to accept my old IHD for recycling!!
Probably because they've not needed to set anything up to do that because people don't (apart from this one-off situation) have any need send them small electricals.

You can probably recycle it anywhere that participates in WEEE recycling.  Your local council might even take it as a small electrical; ours say to leave it in a carrier bag by the black bin on collection day, you'd have to check if yours does something similar.

I assume that there will be no recoverable personal data on the device or should I invite it to a meeting with Mr Hammer ?
The in-home device knows nothing about you. If you remove the batteries then it'll forget all your tariff information too.
On the Geo Trio, the "stand" on the back slides off to let you get at the three AAs (or AAAs).

I have the new IHD but am unable to use it - because Octopus are ignoring my requests for instructions on how to set it up and use it !!
Evidently - it's not a case of plug n play, like the first one was

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

Is it the mini (bright pink)? If so you can get instructions online or I think it has a QR code on the back you can scan for instructions.

It seems more likely that Octopus haven't done what only they can do.

OK The replacement IHD does not have rechargeable batteries - and none were supplied
If I fit non-rechargeables - it's going to eat its way through them......and also how will they like being charged when plugged in ?
Is it OK not to use batteries at all - and just plug it in, as and when... will it update itself quickly every time  ?

Don’t use batteries unless you want to go through them like there’s no tomorrow. Leave it plugged in.
You cant charge them in it so don’t try.
It updates quickly usually, mine never update though it’s in the drawer, I use the mini.

I dont think an end user can provision an IHD, so dont know what Octopus are doing, there is no setup menu.  Someone from Octopus side needs to get it paired, or send an engineer to do it.  If they sent it you they might have paired it before sending, otherwise it wont work until they or an engineer pair it.

From my experience Octopus need to pair the meters on your account to the GUID number on the IHD which is on the box it came in, it's also on a label underneath the unit and in the menu on the unit.
It's quite a while since I had to have my IHD paired to make it connect but I think I provided this info by phone but I suppose it could be done by email if you don't mind waiting weeks and weeks for a response. I'm not sure human beings are involved the Octopus email process any more.
You're more likely to get a faster response and action if you start a formal complaint.
