An absolutely hideous article. I dismay at how poor journalism can be

"Octopus Energy customers given £676" - an absolute
"Energy customers on a two-year fix would make a saving of £676 IF the charges were scrapped today." -  an IF

Also just as dim, how can anyone think "energy suppliers must offer zero standing charge tariffs" means a free lunch where there's suddenly zero SC along with no increase in unit price.

    SMH
That's truly shocking. Goes a long way of explaining the poor level of debate these days. When those in the mainstream media have absolutely no clue what they are writing about.

Bad enough on social media, but when this is a main stream media outlet. They really need regulator to hammer them for total miss information.

I just feel for the staff who have to field calls emails etc from "Outraged" from Daily Express. Over why they have not had their refund 🤬

When I first came to UK in early 1990s, I seem to recall Electricity being charged a much higher kWH rate for the first 2 KWH each day, and then a lower KWH rate for any usage after the first 2 KWH. I will assume that gas had a similar formula, but I do not remember there being a Standing Charge.

Perhaps this would be a good compromise? Say you go 2 weeks away on holiday - while away, you would not be charged daily standing charges for Elec and Gas, which at the moment you are.

I'm thinking - as others have mentioned - law of unintended consequences. I'm sure many who want no standing charge don't appreciate that their unit charge will go considerably UP.

EDIT: I've read back a few pages and note that a current supplier has this sort of pricing structure. Just interesting to note that at one time, this was the default way of charging - in the days where if you lived in Manchester, Norweb was your one and only choice of supplier.

Have to laugh at the media & how they get things so wrong..

    https://www.express.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/1989225/octopus-energy-676-daily-charge-ditched

But under the new plans, suppliers must offer zero standing charge tariffs to households. It means that Octopus Energy customers on a two-year fix would make a saving of £676 if the charges were scrapped today.

As people will stop reading at that point, & think this is gospel & start moaning when they do not get the savings quoted🤷‍♀️🤣

I referred to that in another post today- but didn't dare give it credence by including the link - or support the site by driving traffic to it..

Even by Express standards it is a truly woeful article.

But then maybe many of their readers or the author do have second properties lying empty all year who wont pay any  inreased unit costs.

There is IPSO but they're … not great at holding publications to account.

Accuracy is a fundamental tenet of press standards, ipso facto.
