What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole task easier and quicker. We also accept that, sometimes, life just gets on top of us and we can't keep up, maybe because we're time-poor, not in the best of health and/or we have littlies who need us. We are definitely NOT control freaks aiming for perfection and utterly spotless show-homes.
Welcome to the weekly Flylady Thread. You're more than welcome to join us in the everlasting battle against dust, grime and gibble. The aim of our thread is to make those onerous tasks less daunting, and to support each other - and to make time for the finer things in life!
Please do remember we have to abide by MSE rules; each post should, ideally, include some mention of flying.
Thank you Natty for last week's thread.
Please follow the forum rules on this thread as Flylady has been here a LONG time and is a fabulous support and resource for lots of us. All posts should have some Flylady-related (ooh a compound adjective) content!
The idea is that even if you are really busy you don't need to fall off the wagon!
Every room comes back around next week so please don’t stress about catching up
These lists are only suggestions and not a must do list; you are more than welcome to post and follow your own lists.
Also adding a declutter mission each day will help to gradually clear the clutter and make flying easier.
A few of the basics before we start the week
Hotspots are areas where if one thing gets put there, loads of other things follow!
Daily routines are anything you need to do on a daily basis like washing, swish and swipe kitchen and bathroom, ironing, making beds, vacuuming high traffic areas, making meals etc.
Night-time routines are all things which make getting ready in the morning easier, preparing clothes for the next day, making lunches, swish & swipes of the kitchen and tidying the living room before you go to bed plus personals like shower/brush teeth etc.
Fling Boogie - stick on some loud music, grab a bin bag and whiz around the house finding items that can go out with the rubbish, recycling, for charity shop, basically anything that will stop it cluttering your home.
Swish and swipe/S&S means have a quick wipe over an area such as a sink or toilet to prevent the build up of dirt. This is usually done on a daily basis
HHE/HHC/HHI Half Hour exercise/challenge/ironing ... run around for 30 minutes to the Benny Hill music frantically cleaning exercising or ironing.. .other music may be used if you prefer!
WM ~ Washing machine
TD ~ Tumble dryer
SC ~ Slowcooker
BM ~ Breadmaker
DW ~ Dishwasher
SOAADFA ~ Sit on 'bottom' and do 'nothing'
KH/XH/FW ~ Ex-husband and other not so polite versions
DH/DD/DS/DW/DP ~ Dear husband/daughter/son/wife/partner/whatever
OH/SO ~ Other half/significant other
NN ~ nice neighbour
Toxic (friend/mother/sister/whoever) ~ person in your life that seems to exist to make your life miserable
AF ~ Aunt Flo 'time of the month'.. nothing to do with flying but it comes up often.
ETA ~ Edited to add
Gibble ~ miscellaneous crap that appears forever homeless
Dot-to-dot ~ pick a small area (not a whole room) like a chair/coffee/table/shelf/worktop or wherever- that’s your first 'dot' - totally clear it - clean it - and only put back what should be there - deal with what you have removed (not just move it somewhere else) then if you have time move on and do the same to another 'dot' -the idea is just like a dot to dot puzzle, you aim to join up all the dots and have a tidy room. The trick is to keep each dot tidy until you get them all joined up! All credit to AnW's Mum for this one
RoD ~ Room of Doom, the one room that feels like it is a permanent pit and cannot be used to its potential!
MAD half hour
- Mad is the abbreviation for Make A Difference.
The idea is that you have a Forth bridge (ie never-ending - or just huge) task but that you work on it in half-hour bursts. This way you know you ARE stooping, and that you won't get it finished but you will make a difference - so it might be clearing out - the garage or shed, or clothes sorting, or weeding - you get the picture - but rather than keep going until you've lost the will to live you do half an hour...but, eventually those half hours will get the job done!
Mr S/A/T/M/L/Al - supermarkets Sainsburys, Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Lidl, Aldi. You get the picture!!

FLYLADY THREAD PICK'N'MIX - spotted on an old thread from 2019 so I thought I would resurrect it ...
I'm not going to list the rooms by day, just by room but you are free to either do a whole room (all three levels) or mix up the levels across the week - so, for example, you might pick level 1 to do for all rooms. Just post what you HAVE achieved! Sharp-eyed flyladies will notice there are six lists...because YOU are picking and mixing. You might choose the worst room to really make a difference (and because you have the time) or the least minging because you're short of time. Given we are entering a busy time with lots to do I thought this makes a bit more sense. If you have any suggestions to add to the list please feel free to let me know

Gosh, first! Thanks for the list.
Today comprised:
- overslept but made it to church.
- went to village Christmas fayre; Mr N won a small bottle of port on the tombola, so that suited him fine.
- with the help of a lot of thought and a couple of Zoom meetings with DB, we have now electronically signed one of the 3 (so far) documents to sell Mum's house. This electronic stuff is both very clever and very scary. DB thinks completion is likely to be mid-Jan, although it is up to us. So that is possibly 3 more visits to the house - including Christmas - that we have to clear it. Eek.
- wrote a few more Christmas cards.
- Looked at The Big Give list to pick out charities for family 'presents' when it goes live https://donate.biggive.org/christmas-challenge-2024
- Did final check on Attendance Allowance form so will print it tomorrow and get it in the post.
- Mr N is making progress with the new pan stand so I've started giving thought to what will go where.
- Drum practiceRemember...a layer of dust protects the wood beneath it.8 -
Hallooooo xx
Thank you to Natty and Valli for keeping the thread going 😘
I was nearly up at 6am again, but I laid mentally composing a poem for a colleagues's leaving do this week....and I woke up at 7.40 am. Makes a change to counting sheep I suppose 🤣
Anyhoo. I'm up, made my bed, taken my meds, turned over the calendars, got weighed, completed Wordle in TWO (impressed myself 🤣), completed Strands with one hint, but only managed two lines on Connections. Hmmmmm. That's not what I call 'em. Mutter. Mumble. First brew is slipping down nicely.
To Do Today
Get dressed
Feed the birds
Put out the recycling
Laundry shuffle
Put away airer
Mr T delivering between 3pm and 4 pm
Mr A delivering between 8pm and 9 pm
P & S calling for coffee this morning- they can take their Advent calendars, the church magazine, and P's cheque. Oh, and Christmas cards for that side of the family.
I usually shower and put on my nightie in time to sit and watch Only Connect on a Monday evening. Good thing I remembered Mr A's time slot. I'm assuming he's coming. Mr T keeps texting me to remind me. But Mr A hasn't. Better check my emails.
I've lost half a pound this week. Holding steady at the three and a half stones off mark. I think I'm a bear: in hibernation mode and craving carbs 🤔
Love to all

Thank you for the new thread. It's the start of another hectic week for me, as so much to get done ahead of my uni exams starting next week, however, all my assignments for this term have now been submitted.
My list for today
Put the bin out
Attend uni lectures
Clean windows in the bathroom
Polish mirrors in the bathroom
Clean the bathroom cabinet shelves.
Take the dog for a long walk.
Write Xmas cards
Schedule festive food shopping
Update the festive present list
I think that is everything I need to get done today. I hope everyone has a lovely Monday or week.5 -
Morning all. Thank you Valli for the new thread.
Sorry I've been MIA a lot recently. I am still playing catch-up from the fortnight with my arm in a sling, compounded by the fact that we already had a lot of social events in the diary for last week. This week should be less hectic, but I have plenty of outstanding jobs to fill it! Unfortunately I also still have plenty of aches and pains to slow me down. As a card sent to me by a good friend says, "I really don't mind getting older, but my body is taking it badly."
My list of hopes for today:
- give Rosie her anti-flea treatment
- expect a delivery from the jungle
- re-advertise the old sofa on Freecycle (I cancelled my first ad before the moderator had a chance to publish it, because of our busy week)
- send DH's Christmas wish list to DC, once I receive a reply from a reply about postage costs from an online company from which he wants several items
- order some more books as requested
- do the basic marzipan and roll-out icing on the 14 mini-cakes that are still naked!!! (finishing off the decoration of these cakes and baking others which thankfully won't need decorating are my priorities for this week)
- send long overdue replies to 4 emails
- write a thankyou card to my heart surgeon for another year of life
- clear my desk.
If I get all that done I shall be a happy bunny - and exhausted!
Hope everyone has a good week xxx

I've done my To Do Today's plus washed towels and tea towels which are now draped on the radiator and airer.
No substitutes or not available items on my Mr T order per their email. Excellent news.
Pops' 90th birthday card has arrived.
P was impressed by how organised I am. So am I 🤣.I must have forgotten something 🤔
