Tyne Tunnel 2 - demonstrably unfair practices

  • I would suggest that a week would allow almost everybody with a practical problem in paying to find a way to do so. In the case of parking I would suggest that nobody who has obviously paid should expect to receive a penalty.
None of which is very difficult to achieve.
The current window is fine, as evidenced by 98% of tolls being collected in time. To put it another way, you can use the few minutes saved by having an automatic toll and not having to queue and pay at a toll booth and pay by phone when you next stop after the toll

98 % is actually a pretty low percentage for something that is supposedly easy to pay.

Nothing to say the 2% have any difficulty using the system to make payments, as it includes those who hoped to get away without paying as well as those who claim they didn't realise there was a charge.

It is very easy to pay. Unless you forget. Which you are more likely to do with a week window rather than a day

Not sure this is really a "Consumer Rights" issue in the first place, but the "fairness" or otherwise of it is irrelevant to whether it's legal.

It is not me who has used the service but I am presumably entitled to have an opinion on the OP"s experience.
I agree with the OP that the payment window is ludicrously small (and ought to be increased).
You think that between 24 and 48 hours to pay a toll is "ludicrously" small ?

Yes. If you are going to provide post-event payment you might as well do it properly.
The currently restricted period is typical of design by someone who has payment facilities readily available and is unaware that this may not always be the case.

    Personal responsibility....
If you are doing something. Make sure if any charges are due that you know how to pay..
    Not rocket science.

If you are not happy with the timescale, then write to them. Pointless arguing here where, most have the opposite opinion. It is never going to change anything.

No matter what timescale you put on it , it will not suit somebody.

You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time.
  • OP if you have missed the signs, then I think, politely, you need to get an eye exam. Or you rely too much on the SatNav and don’t look at the signs on the sides of the road.

You could potentially call the toll operator and say you didn’t know but realistically, they haven’t got to let you off with no fine. But they might.
