But presumably any emergency messages would be broadcast via some local transmission facility that would be audible even when not receiving a signal from external stations?FIREDreamer said:
Interesting regarding the Mersey Tunnels - my radio cuts off for about half the under-river journey due to no signal (whether Queensway or Kingsway).eskbanker said:

The advice to switch your radio on before entering the tunnel is not so that you can enjoy Greatest Hits Radio Liverpool while travelling.FIREDreamer said:

It is because if there is an incident, announcements can be broadcast to your radio by Mersey Tunnels Police using the special emergency channel.0 -

I doubt many people have such a hectic itinerary that they couldn’t fit in a couple of minutes on the website to pay the toll.brianposter said:
You clearly are not much of a traveller. Many people make journeys which take several days so one week would be a far more reasonable time to allow for payment.saajan_12 said:They should be given reasonable time to be able to pay, eg the timeframe should allow for them to complete the journey, reach a place with internet access, etc which they probably can within 24 hours.
I carry a mobile phone but it is not a smartphone (no coverage at home so why would I have one) so the website is unavailable whilst travelling. Seven days at least permits those who are quite happy to pay to do so - 24 hours is not sufficient.born_again said:

Best bet is set up auto pay when you know you are in the area.

You can pay by phone if the issue is being offline....brianposter said:I carry a mobile phone but it is not a smartphone (no coverage at home so why would I have one) so the website is unavailable whilst travelling. ...or you can pay at any Paypoint location.
There are 28,000 of them across the UK so you should pass quite a few of them on your marathon drive.0 -
If there is an incident, how would you know what frequency to tune the radio to?Alderbank said:The advice to switch your radio on before entering the tunnel is not so that you can enjoy Greatest Hits Radio Liverpool while travelling.

Or does the emergency channel broadcast to all frequencies?0 -
Here's how tunnel radio broadcasts work:
- TransmittersLow-power transmitters are placed throughout the tunnel, each with a specific range.
Re-broadcastingTunnel radio re-broadcasting systems re-transmit AM/FM radio broadcasts so drivers can listen to the radio while in a tunnel.Emergency broadcastsIn an emergency, the system can interrupt regular broadcasts to relay warning and evacuation messages.FrequencyIn some cases, the radio frequency inside the tunnel is different from the one used by the broadcaster. In other cases, the program is transmitted on the same frequency as outside.
Admittedly an AI answer but it seems the tunnel emergency broadcast will override any AM/FM regular broadcast.
Everyone would be wise to brush up on tunnel safety. A fire in a tunnel is your worst nightmare!1 -

You're not driving for several days without stopping to use bathrooms / sleep / refuel. At one of those rest stops you can go online to pay. If you choose to not use commonly used services or tech, ie no smartphone and no hotel, etc then yes you have to go a bit out of your way for example go into town and find and internet cafe. However you could apply the same logic to what if you don't have internet at home at all - then even 7 days isn't enough and you still need to go out of your way to find an alternative.1
