If you're paying two standing charges that's almost an extra £210 annually compared to genuine overnight Economy 7.  That would help to pay back the cost of a new Quantum, and that's before the electricity savings that it would bring.
As previously asked many times, what is the EXACT name of the tariff, as printed on current bills?

The sc rates are similar but your off peak rates are lower than standard economy 7 tabled here by nearly 2-3p  ne/nw regions - but then your day rates are higher by similar margin 1-3p.

So it may be worth holding onto your legacy metering for the afternoon boost.

And even the tariff with second sc.  If use enough off peak units to cover the difference in day rates and second sc.

You might save outright - bbut even if not their is a risk if lost boost you would use more day rates for heating By evening - and lose ability to use things like washing machines and cook at off ppeakin afternoon slot etc.

My supplier EOnNext doesn't like complex metering which at one stage it defined as any split from single block off peak - so maybe looking to switch before they replace my old smart meter.

I had considered edf - but they have a bit of a rep here for poor cs - and the new SNUG octopus looks like maybe interesting - with winter 1 hr afternoon boost and cheap 9p night rate in my region anyway

This is sounding like a legacy THTC tariff to me - as seen quite a lot in Scotland.

(edit - although don't those give extra hours rather than just splitting he 7?)

  • I only pay one standing charge

  • My tariff is noting to do with  the heater issues

I’m happy with my tariff , they are pushing for a smart meter but I’m holding off as long as I can

Mine have always been on 5 for years

I did open the damper as someone suggested , but it was not suitable with a lower input setting

it’s back up to 5 , I’m expecting it to trip either tonight if tomorrow!

I’m at my  wits end , it’s new thermostat so not that , element seem ok but will be checked when the guy comes and replaced if necessary

only other thing is insulation inside , been told the deteriorates over the years , leakage causes overheat ,

    Anything else ??
It seems to me that the storage heater is undersized for the size of the room, hence having to run flat out continuously.  Not an ideal situation for the heater and expensive to run.

In the short term op you may have to run on a reduced input level of 3 or 4 (to compensate for the degraded heater insulation/high leakage).  In the longer term, perhaps replace with two heaters spaced far apart in the room.

Good luck with the heater on higher setting trial.

It's a tricky balance whether to repair or give up and replace on something so old.

Self repair one area where some do save,  £75 labour rates another entirely, as mount quickly.  But would occur if installed new too to some extent.

Set it to a lower heat input level.  Close the flap (heat output control) before going to bed.  Open the flap if it gets chilly before the next charge.  If it still keeps getting chilly, turn the heat input slightly up and see what happens the next day.
  • Input set to 4 last night , no issues up to now …

Will do the sanity test again today

the insulation panel is very reasonable in price , so I’m looking to replace that anyway , will see what electrical says when he comes

thank you all for your help , if I hadn’t lost my job , I would have replaced the heater but I just can’t do it yet …

so if I can keep this going thru this winter , I should be able to replace both my heaters for next years winter
