Never run my old Unidares in your case input maximum of 5, the user guide for mine does seem very similar in operation to the xt - including the output control - but in a really cold snap do run at upto mid position on input - so your 3 setting. But (*)
And they do get pretty hot to the extent uncomfortable if touch /even briefly. Even on lower settings recently - about your 2 the top of vent was over 50C at end of charge.
That 5 by the way is the max input on the xt and is for "colder weather" days - not milder days - spring autumn etc when lower settings advised.
Its arguable what user guide "colder weather" means. And then on our generation - there is the variable air flow boost from the output control if use it - to vary effective power out via increased air flow for given core temperature that complicates the interaction of two settings.
But as a guess as to what that might mean - the Dimplex sizing tool iirc suggests heaters sized for -3C external for Eng and a lower -5 iirc for Scotland and 18c for bedroom target.

So guess to discharge max charge arguably that's input 5 and output on max to quickly open damper or manually at max to force open.
Do you use output control much ?
With any luck the service guy got the right piece of kit you needed and you might just have heard the normal thermostat kick in.
(*) But I am on e10 so they charge 3 times a day - so 12 midnight -5 am, 1pm - 4pm and 8pm - 10 pm. So would need to run hotter on 1 charge overnight e7 type tariffs. Which is why I pay extra like 3-4p extra off peak for e10.
And hence a genuine question as you say 1pm.Rosie1001 said:

If you mean 1pm - are you sure your on e7 - and not some other legacy tariff. Like my e10 times as above.
And if not and you mean 1 am - (sounds more likely a dst than gmt(*) e7 start time ) then 1 am to 4 am would still be 3 hr charge - which for an initial charge to a medium setting like 3 on the XT doesn't sound completely unreasonable.
(*) And 1 am gmt is one of the later e7 timings - midnight and 0030 gmt - start are arguably more common - so do you know your actual e7 times.
The heaters will not always charge for a full 7 hrs - and if like mine you will hear a definite "click" when the normal input dial controlled thermostat opens and cuts the power - even over the noise of a tv etc in lounge. So especially so at 4 am in a quiet bedroom.

Mine have always been on 5 for years
I did open the damper as someone suggested , but it was not suitable with a lower input setting
it’s back up to 5 , I’m expecting it to trip either tonight if tomorrow!
I’m at my wits end , it’s new thermostat so not that , element seem ok but will be checked when the guy comes and replaced if necessary
only other thing is insulation inside , been told the deteriorates over the years , leakage causes overheat ,
Anything else ??
