Money Moral Dilemma: Should we ask our daughter and her boyfriend to start paying us rent?

Yes they should pay. Pity they have not offered to help out as I am sure they are aware of your situation.0

So you and your husband are having to claim Universal Credit to get by, and your daughter and her boyfriend earn £120,000 a year between them?
It's a no brainer - get them to pay you some rent!0 -
Crazy, they're earning £10,000 a month, their rent/mortgage cost should be at least £3,000 a month, claim for yourself whatever is left from what they pay.0

They are going to have a shock when they move into their own home if they are not used to paying any bills!! Most definitely they should pay a contribution towards costs, food, gas, electricity, etc. when living with you, work out a sum of money to cover their share and have a word with her. They are being a bit selfish expecting you to keep them for nothing when they earn good money. Does you daughter know you are receiving Universal Credit, if so she must know funds are tight for you, surely she could give you some cash to cover their share or pay for the food shopping, which would be a bit of a help.1

Yes they should contribute towards bills ,when I lived with my parents I paid for food and paid phone bill even though I had a mobile no wonder they can save so must0

It must be hurtful that your daughter and her boyfriend are abusing your kindness, especially if they are paying a mortgage for a new home, redecorating etc. and your daughter is still saving £1,000 a month. Perhaps if you charged them a daily rate they might spend more days elsewhere - in their new home for example. Most people have no option but to live in their home while it is being upgraded and wouldn’t dream of imposing themselves on others, especially over such a significant period of time. A quick look at local AirB&B charges should give you an idea of how much to charge daily! Good luck - I suggest that you sort this out amicably and quickly before it gets any further out of hand and there’s lasting damage, possibly to your relationship with the couple and most certainly to your quality of life and peace of mind.1

Pollycat said:Very rude of your daughter to just stop paying rent and expecting to live with you for free.
Why on earth didn't you tackle this 5 months ago?
Of course you should tell her she's being unfair.0 -
yes you should ask her to pay some rent. Earning £120k between them is a huge amount of money!0

I’m sorry, but really? Why do you feel the need to ask strangers permission to tell your free-loading, super rich daughter (savings of £1k per month? Must be nice) to pay her way? Tell her straight that she needs to pull her weight with rent, bills, chores etc and if she doesn’t then there is always something called a hotel! I mean, come on. Who is the parent here and why are you allowing this?0

I would expect to pay my parent the extra bills / food cost of us moving in - at the least.0
