MSE Supercar ownership experience?

  • Having followed a chap on another forum who is working through a list of super cars to own, the trick seems to be lots of research and patiently looking for a very specific car rather than a spur of the moment purchase of something that catches your eye on Autotrader or Collecting Cars. They got a well maintained Aston Martin Vantage and ran it for 18 months with pretty minimal running costs and lost about £3k in depreciation. They have now bought a Ferrari 360 in red and seem to be doing alright so far. You can reduce the risk of catastrophic bills, but with these sort of cars they are always a possibility.

If you can spanner yourself, a lot of old Porsches can be pretty economical to run with the aid of eBay and breakers. I ran a 986 for 7 years and made a profit breaking it at the end, you could probably do similar with a 911, although it depends how you’re defining ‘super car’.
Not a fan of the Vantage. Doesn’t excel in any one area, maybe except looks.

Ferrari 360 is a good MSE car, its value won’t ever drop, but may creep up. Can be used as a daily driver too.

986 and 911s aren’t really super cars unless it’s the Turbo S or GT RS models. The Turbo engines in the 911 are bullet proof.

Supercar ownership experience is overrated. Most costs a bomb to maintain and reliability is questionable (barring some Japanese cars).

After few months novelty will wear off.

Explore how you can drive normal cars as supercars. Some modern family cars drive better than some older supercars. Take your own car to tacks and drive to its limit. That will give you more fun than any supercar driving.

No, I have not personally owned any supercars but my mates who did gave me above feedback.

Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

Best super car experience is available at any car rental desk.

I've just spent two weeks hooning around a remote Greek island in a hired Fiat Panda 4x4 Twinair.
Just drove it flat out, uphill, down hill and around every hairpin bend, plus a few dirt rally stages thrown in for good measure.
Totally unstickable on gravel or tarmac and all for 45 euro a day (plus £22 excess insurance), bargain!

An older 911 turbo would probably work out as MSE if you get it inspected first, you're likely to be able to sell it again after a year for much the same as it cost as they're beyond the depreciation cycle now
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

As per the Top Gear punchline to the "what's the fastest car?" question.

Unfortunately hiring an actual supercar tends to be pricy and often with very low mileage allowance

This was fun, basically Ford underneath so easy for maintenance. Unfortunately I no longer bend enough to get in and out of it.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

Not a super car but never under estimate the fun a classic mini can be or a MK1 MX5 for that

Having had a couple of very high performance vehicles, Porsche 911 and Jeep SRT8, I'm now having more fun in a cheapish Toyota than any of my other cars apart from the 1977 Ford Escort RS2000

  • Thoughts on the Ferrari 458 coupe? A future modern classic and MSE saving as its unlikely to lose value. Powerful mid-engined high revving V8 and solid reliability
