I think the problem with your idea to drift slowly into a black hole away from the OP's binary choice is that if you force me to ask a very broad question, you need an extremely broad (and long) description and, as always there are so many opinions on here. If a binary question already has 10 replies and no answers, how many will 3 paragraphs of opinions, feelings, and personal history get?

Many many many many English people with 20 years to go, 6 months' income savings, and a diverse investment portfolio go with these two options, so what more info do you need? Why do you need to know the exact personal reasons? This isn't an IFA session and I didn't ask for one. I don't get asked it at the train ticket office, but hundreds of people like me are buying that ticket, so there must be something in it. Or maybe if you worked there, you'd want to ask every traveller exactly *why* they want to go to London today, and why not Bristol?

50/50 is the best suggestion yet.

Same. Vanguard global ftse all cap.
It's just as risky and more expensive. Besides it not being one of the binary answers allowed.

They are both equally negative for different reasons, as I explained in my question. Suggest you have some learning to do. Lesson number one is not investing on the basis of votes in a discussion forum. But if you really are only interested in votes, then perhaps start a poll.
Lesson one would surely be don't touch hot things?

C'mon man, 'stick it in S&P500' gets used as a pretty concise one-liner to all sorts of really impossible questions on here. And in a lot of cases, it's a pretty good one.

But your opinion now is that it's awful, despite really not knowing anything other than 'pick one'. I'm not sure you have got the hang of this 'internet super highway' thing yet.

If that's a lesson you haven't learnt yet, then by all means make it lesson number one.
It's not my opinion that either choice is "awful", and "stick it in the S&P500" certainly doesn't get used much here. Discussion here is almost always more sensible and nuanced, as it should be. You've already limited yourself to Vanguard, so why limit yourself to two flawed options within Vanguard when there are at least a couple of better options, even for someone who doesn't want to do any thinking whatsoever as you state?
You might also wish to acquaint yourself with the forum rules before demanding others tell you what to invest in.

I know you really really want to get to know me and get so much more sensible and nuanced details but I'm quite scared now that you'll simply use it against me to give me even more reasons not to do other things. I now realise that a sensible and nuanced binary choice including one of which is used in here all the time is a problem for you, so I won't ask it again.

Having said that, why wouldn't I invest in Vanguard's S&P 500 UCITS ETF accumulation? Please be sensible and please be nuanced!

Remember. I don't want to do any thinking whatsoever...

You're missing out on companies that are not domiciled in the US or are smaller than the largest 500 (in the US). If you want a US, large cap only portfolio then it's a good choice, but your other fund doesn't meet that requirement.

So, so close. Which one would you pick?

It might surprise you to learn that I am really really not interested in getting to know you, or any other OP who takes such a hostile stance. There are plenty of people to interact with on here who will do so in good faith, so I never feel beholden to those who do not.

What are your requirements? For mine, I picked LGGG with some satellite funds to top up small cap, EM etc.
